:) I remember these! I used to have all the ones you have except the RAF van. The great thing about these models is they are pretty tough, and are fun to play with when you're a kid.

As in 4x4x4 ? The last 4 is to indicate that the truck has 4 wheel steering.

I am talking about army trucks made in the 70's and 80's that were manufactured and stored as reserve trucks in case they were needed in time of a big war...
Those trucks are pretty much new (never used) - but made 20 - 30 years ago.
As for new Army trucks like Kamaz, Ural etc. you are right, they start at about $30,000.

I'm not exactly sure who buys the fresh from the factory Zils made by Amur (maybe Russian army), but I would much rather buy one from an army stockpile suck as http://www.zil131.ru/ (interesting how the diesel version is nearly 2 times the cost of a petrol one!)
The Amur Zil-131's have been shown at the Nizhni Taigil Arms shows for a few years now.

AFAIK it is an independant company that manufactures radio equipment but also has a division that makes these ZIL trucks (they concentrated production of special vehicles there for some reason, maybe because of more qualified personnel that works more precisely and doesn't make as many "bugs" - after all this is life saving equipment..)

How many of these monsters that we have seen in this topic will get into military service?
Which ones in particular do you mean? Out of new ones - Tigr and Vodnik are being supplied quite steadily. Armored Urals were in service for years. Of course tracking vehicle supplies isnt as glamorous as figureing out how many Topols were deployed - but Russian MoD purchases about 30,000 different vehicles per year. So dont worry too much, we got wheels.
Fireglow

Like are those many jeeps and those swamp cars ever going into service?
Not so much the swamp cars... if you'd post a name and /or picture of the *particular* vehicle it would be a lot easier to answer your question. In 16 pages we covered many experimental vehicles that never meant to go into large scale production. Most modifications of Kamaz and Ural are being supplied en mass. Vodnik and Tigr less so. Some of the trucks shown here "lost" to Vodnik/Tigr. Certain truck can be purchased in small numbers by companies or military branches if they are needed.

Yes and No - the KZKT and MZKT trucks have the same type of chassis, transmission and sometimes powerplants but the KZKT main role is tank transporter, MZKT makes trucks for everything.

Yes they do, because all the heavy Maz trucks (that carry rockets) are made by MZKT. The KZKT are used as tank transporters.

Well, most Russian trucks do have better off-road capabilities than US trucks (most of Russia has few roads outside of cities and has very difficult terrain), and also the Kraz-6322 are reliable, capable and very easy to maintain compared to the American trucks which are reliable but expensive...Plus the Iraqis are used to and prefer Russian equipment.

I think it's a little of both: in the 90's, most of Russia's car manufacturers made poor quality products compared to soviet times - because of cost cutting, firing of qualified workers and assholes like Berezhovski being in charge...
But at the same time, trucks like gaz-66, Ural-4320, Zil-131 etc. take a lot more abuse than a Gazelle truck - but the legends about them are of their reliability and high quality :)

Dima you are comparing trucks made for military with a purely civilian vehicle. Military trucks have schedualed maintanence performed on them and are used for a short time by armed forces before being sold as surplus. Civilian gazels especially in taxi applications are just run until they fall apart.

Civilian gazels especially in taxi applications are just run until they fall apart.
The military vehicles are also made with greater care and more money is spent on developing them - especially in the soviet times. These same trucks in Afghanistan, Mongolia, and former soviet countries run non stop for decades many recording over 1,000,000 KM of off-road driving. They are just better developed, designed and manufactured...
The Gazelle was developed in the 90's and at a tiny fraction of the cost devoted to testing, design and development compared to military vehicles developed in Soviet Times...
When the Gazelle was introduced, it was known as a problamatic vehicle and "Autoreview" , ZaRulom" and other Russian auto magazines gave it bad reviews...the second generation of Gazelle trucks appears to be more reliable with most of the problems worked out.

Dima, the military trucks are designed better than civilian ones. This comes with increased price, weight(built in redundancies) and fuel consumption. And it seems like Gazel will be phased out soon with GAZ's purchase of a British light truck manufacturer. Sorry don't have that company's name on top of my head. It was in Za Rulem so you can look it up there.

Does it say Gazelle will go out of production? Because I would think the new British vans are going to be more expensive and there is still a market for cheap light trucks in Russia...even the "buhanka" is still in production :)

05-12-2007, 03:52 AM
"Buhanka" fills a very specialized niche of vans. And I think Gazelle will go out of production eventually as it becomes obsolete. As for the price of British vans the cost will be brought down by relocating the production for internal market to Russia. Also the British vans are FWD, so Gazelle and its succesor model will probably hold the niche of RWD vans and light trucks.

On the subject of Russian trucks, the MAZ-543 (If I've got that right) was a large off-road truck that was used as the TEL for the SCUD missile and various other heavy cargo/systems. Is it still in production or has it been replaced with a newer design?
I believe its still in production but the S-400 Triumf have a new type of TEL not using MAZ. БАЗ-64022 is used for the S-400 Triumf TEL. If you can read russian heres a site that shows more BAZ chassis for the S-400. http://leasinginfo.ru/catalog/item/4516.html (http://leasinginfo.ru/catalog/item/4516.html)
Btw that Panzir chassis is the last one and after it finishes trials that will be the production version :)

Nah, it would behave normally - this is a 6 ton (offroad payload) truck, the armor adons are probably around 2 tons, so it's still lighter than it's designed to be :)

Nah the doors need more protection for that, you would be looking for a BTR with a bulldozer blade or a minesweeping trall.

Note the hinged armor panel with the slanted edge to the rear of the cab; this I think covers the door to fully protect the cab.

I am new here, so my hallo to everybody and congradulation on for very interesting post.
To anyone who understand about Kamaz (specificaly 4326 and other all terrain models) mechanics; I understand that unlike Ural and Kraz, they do not have differential lockers. Also I belive they do not have so good suspension flexibility for difficult terrain. What is opinion of those who drive them off-road?

I believe the earlier models Kamaz-4310 don't have diff-locks, the newer models have differencial locks on all axles as standard and have improved cross country capability (larger tires, better suspension travel etc.)
So the new "Mustang family" is more capable than the old 4310 series.

maybe its just not practical enough for Russian truck makers to consider adding a little style to their designs, especially with the current level of financing that they have. at the moment, getting the job done is sufficient enough for their models.

An observation. Anything Russian or Soviet made, to me, looks like its designed and built for old school, no BS, in your face, fvck em up and win, warfighting. I drive trucks, Mack trucks. IMO, the one's they make now, are lousy. 20 years ago, I wouldn't say that because they were truly built "Mack tough".
The trucks today are built by committee. Lowest cost, grab parts from the same bin and slap them on, get them out the door and pray the warranty expires before they break down, mentality.
I hope Russia doesn't go down that road of poor quality that we americans are forced to endure. Peace.

The new trucks look different, pretty much like the western ones, but to me the older classics like zil-131, ural-4320 or maz-537g look a lot more like a military truck should be, big mud terrain wheels, brutal appearance and rugged simpleness... No electronics to freeze at -40C, no ECUs to flood, just gears and oil.
