Marine gets 10 years for selling stolen body armor

CAMP PENDLETON, California (AP) -- A Marine has been convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison for selling stolen body armor over the Internet.

Marine authorities said they believe Staff Sgt. Marvin Funiestas, 26, sold 100 to 110 of the ceramic-reinforced vests before he was arrested in November. The vests were intended for U.S. troops; some servicemen in the Middle East have reported trouble obtaining vests.

Funiestas was sentenced last week on charges of conspiracy, wrongfully selling government property and larceny.

Investigators believe another Marine, who has not yet been charged, falsified reports about the number of vests on hand and sent vests to Funiestas, who sold about $88,000 worth of equipment for $35,000 to $40,000.

"This was brand-new equipment," prosecutor Capt. Mark Spalding said. "This is especially hard to take because we are having a hard time getting enough vests to field with our Marines."

The sale of the vests, known as Point Blank Interceptor Ballistic body armor, is restricted to law enforcement and military personnel.

Authorities are trying to retrieve the body armor. One eBay customer in San Diego bought two vests and shipped one to a son-in-law in the Army, who was stationed in Kuwait and had not been issued a vest.

Spalding said that while most of the vests were sold domestically, at least two or three went to China, raising concerns that Chinese engineers may try to duplicate the design.

It would be fitting to dropship him to Fallujah or Ramadi and make him walk point without a vest!

F*cking idiot, appalling behavior, especially from a Marine Staff Sergeant. Would be more understandable if it a more junior rank without any common sense, but damn! 10 years isn't enough, just f*cking irresponsible!

We had a SGT who stole all the pioneer gear and helmets from the Marines in our unit. He was caught selling it at a swap meet somewhere in L.A., but this SSGT is the worst kinda human being there is! Ten years is not nearly enough time for this A-Hole!!

that's f*** up. i hope that guy feels really bad. because i do.

I think that he is only sorry for being caught.

This is just discusting.
(If I'm not wrong, he will be send to a military prison? And he might get a really hard time surviving there I would think.)

Don't mean to make a joke about a serious matter, but I just saw an Interceptor Vest at Walmart with a Made In China tag on it for $3.99. How did they reverse engineer it that quick?

They couldn't properly design the kit themselves if their next rice harvest depended on it. :fork:

Probably just a cheap look-alike they managed to create from photos of the actual vest.

I think you are talking about the airsoft ones that are made in Hong Kong, China!
The real problem with the Chinease aquiring the vest is that, the OTV has a classified layer of kevlar and the Chinease might back engineer the technology. I always wondered why is that such a big idea but I was looking at my interceptor ( got it on ebay 1year ago $150 US ) and I noticed how less bulky it is compared to our Russian,Euro,Isreali counterparts, etc... So maybe thats the issue any one care to elaborate?
Question, I have this otv and I was wondering if there is a possibilty of me sending it to the military for it to get used but I don't want to get charges brought on me any advice thx?

Less bulky?

Even with the ceramic inserts this weighs less than half what the intercepter weighs...

The intercepter gives better protection, no doubt. But it ain't half heavy.

Yes you are absolutly correct I have a friend who has one (also acquired on ebay) and yes it is alot lighter so thx for the correction. Well as far as otv similiar to our body armor maybe its th ewieght issue???
And royal I was wondering if you guys will get newer body armor or if not why would the mark5 (Im guessing here) be better? And what do you think of the kiwi body armor? Because to my understanding they use your Desert dpm and a body armor similiar to yours but, with a full sized plate. Something similiar to french otv. thx
