Great plane, many pilots liked the airplane more than the other state-of-the-art fighters because it was flown by people only and not at all by computers.

Capt. Kim Campbell, an A-10 Thunderbolt II pilot deployed with the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing, surveys the battle damage to her airplane.
That woman has fine taste in aircraft!

Yeah, I see these damn things everyday here at Eglin since we have the big test range out here. Pretty cool airplane.

Someone once told me that the cockpit is reinforced with titanium armor and that projectiles wouldnt do any harm to the pilot. I wonder if its true?

There are, or were, some A10's based in England (maybe the same squadren) and i used to see them at airshows and stuff as a kid and i remember talk of the USAF retiring them cos they are slow and obsolete cos of the fact they were designed to destroy Soviet tanks etc in Eastern Europe (which is no longer a threat). But obviously they thought better of it, thankfully for the ground forces in Iraq and A-Stan.

I remember watching a show on Wings about the A-10 and that basically the entire aircraft was built around the cannon and a titianium bathtub that surrounds the pilot.
All of the A-10's glass is bulletproof and the cockpit itself is surrounded by a heavy tub of titanium. Titanium armor protects both the pilot and critical areas of the flight control system. This titanium "bathtub" can survive direct hits from armor-piercing and high explosive projectiles up to 37mm in size. The front windscreen can withstand up to a 23mm projectile. Fire retardant foam protects the fuel cells which are also self sealing in the event of puncture.

I remember hearing that the Air Force wanted to replace the A-10 with some modified version of the F-16, both of which they used in the first Gulf War, but the F-16 was largely ineffective and the A-10 very much so. So they decided to scrap that version of the F-16 and continue using the A-10 for Combat Air Support.

Whats the fuss. the aircraft is designed to take that much damage and more.
Its only one plane.

I heard that before GW 1 the USAF was planning to scrap all the A-10's........then GW1 happened and it did so bloody well they decided to keep them..........then just before GW2 there was talk of scraping it AGAIN!!!.......Lets hope they dont........The JSF and F-22 would be poor replacements.............The A-10 is probably the most effective fixed wing (jet) close air support platform in existence (followed closely by the Su-25 "frogfoot").

As an Army puke in the late 70's, we were mainly tng to fight in Europe, and after seeing a film about this plane's capabilities we always hoped a squadron of these would be around.
We saw a dual view from the wing of the A/C and from an observation post. A single A-10 made one run @ 10 vehicles that were spaced 50-400 meters apart. Firing his main gun in 1/2 second intervals he "walked his rudders" back & forth & hit every vehicle. All you saw was sparks & explosions from the DU ammo. Tanks had their barrels melt off, Apc's had their tracks come off, jeeps burned like firewood. Awesome is not even close to describing the event; more like terrifying. Ask an Iraqi.

In the dutch new sienctist (KIJK) II read that the A10 statred by designing a projectile (the bullet) then the gun and around that the plane...

I've heard that comment made too, that the O/A-10 was more or less designed around the GAU-8/A 'Avenger.' Wouldn't really surprise me. Probably its biggest selling point over the YA-9.

If you get a chance to look @ an A-10 up close, or in a good pick, you can see that the nosewheel is offset to the right & rotates when retracted to fit in the well.
The plane WAS designed around the gun, as stated above.

I remember this young woman pilot being interviewed. She landed the A-10 safely after being hit by all the flak and a Roland II(thank you France).
I thought she was cute as a button then.
This plane should be handed to the US Army. The Air Force doesn't appreciate "tactical" aircraft obviously, the Army NEEDS these type of aircraft, the Marines have their own close air support aircraft.
These old warthogs are slow, they sound stupid,I used to watch them fly over Myrtle Beach everyday. I thought,"What a loser"! Little did I realize the slow speed was perfect for close air support. Give them to the US Army.

Yes, I saw them occasionally in deepest Wiltshire (presumably flying from or to Boscombe Down). This chap, the Northrop YA-9A, was part of the competition which led to the A-10 being developed:
http://www.anigrand.com/AA2021ya-9.html
It resembles the Soviet Frogfoot, oddly enough, although there must be only so many ways you can design a jet aircraft so that it can go slow enough to set up for an accurate pass, without dropping out of the sky. Judging by the damage in the photograph, it was a good idea to put the engines above the fuselage.
AFAIK there isn't a decent A-10 flight simulator; the last one came out back in the mid-1990s and had MCGA graphics.
