LONDON, England (*******) -- Online gaming firms faced their biggest-ever crisis on Monday after U.S. Congress unexpectedly passed legislation to ban online gaming there, threatening jobs and hitting stocks by as much as 70 percent.

Britain's PartyGaming Plc, operator of leading online poker site PartyPoker.com, and rivals Sportingbet and 888 Plc said they would likely pull out of the United States and warned on future profits.

PartyGaming's shares fell 59 percent by 0725 GMT, while Sportingbet lost 64 percent, 888 was down 45 percent and gaming software provider Playtech fell 55 percent. Austria's bwin.com Interactive Entertainment fell as much as 22 percent in the first few minutes of trading.

U.S. Congress unexpectedly approved a bill early on Saturday that would make it illegal for banks and credit-card companies to make payments to online gambling sites.

The House of Representatives and Senate approved the measure and sent it to President George W. Bush to sign into law. Most analysts think his approval is certain.

"We believe that this will have a very material impact on the long-term prospects of online gambling, and in particular poker," said analyst Julian Easthope at UBS. "This will lead to a rapid decline in the use of online poker sites."

RIP to all those Amercians who have "donated" their money to me in the fine art of netpoker. Now I need to find other suckers to finance my luxurious life =(

So what is defined as online? Is it OK to have computer terminals in malls, bars, gas stations where you can play poker as long as you don't do it on the internet? what gives?

"We have a right to gamble!! It's in the Constitution." rofl rofl

I don't know how far it's going to take us into totalitarianism, but I can figure that Congress can't make any tax revenue off of online gambling, so they ban it.

Big deal. If you're gettin your shoes, coat, and hat took online by some toothless Brits, Congress is doing you a big favor.

While I don't see anything wrong (in theory) with this legislation, there is a bit of a stumbling block.

It's not 100% enforceable.

I can't help thinking that regulation of vice is much better than prohibition, because it takes the money out of the hands of criminals.

Still, if the US govt wants to spend it's time in this (non-profitable) way, who am I to complain?

I know a lot of people, myself included, who will spend 5-10 hours a week playing online poker purely for entertainment, not to try to grind out some cash. You've gotta have a little cash involved or there's no competition in the game...

I used to be able to go home on a friday night, sign up for a $5 tournament and then spend 4-5 hours in there, and maybe win 10-20 bucks. It was cheap entertainment, playing a game that I enjoyed. The cost and convinence factor of online poker are dwarfed by the hassle and expenses of going to a casino for poker, so yeah to me it is a big deal. The gov just eliminated one of my favorite hobbies.

For those of you who like pissing your money away, you'll have to do it at the tables. Fascism, I know.

For all the parents out there, it's one less thing to worry about. Kids can get credit cards, and get themselves into serious debt, and ruin their credit which has lesting effects well into adulthood. Some people aren't able to cope and never get their finances back in order if being in debt and having bad credit is all they've ever known since they were old enough to have their own money and have credit.

Which kid had his/her own credit card ? Its the job of the Parents to raise their children, not the goverment. If parents hand out credit cards to children which aren't responsible with money - Uh, well...

You can get into serious debt in a million ways - Are they gonna ban Mobile Phones, Clothes, Computers etc ? Also the health problems: Cigarretes, Alcohol, and don't forget McDonalds & co they are ruining/killing hundreds of thousands if not millions of lives more than Online Gambling.

I just hate this parenting by goverments - If I am a adult I can decide for myself whether I want to gamble online or not.
