Na pěti stanovištích změřili své síly v „čistě vojenských“ disciplínách medailisté z olympijských her, či světových šampionátů.

Sounds like a russian name. Is it common in Czech republic to have second names end with "-ov" ?
no, actually her father's name is "Kuchar" (means "cook"). If he would be "Kucharov", her name would be "Kucharovova". In czech and slovak, the women's names end with "-ova". (Except the male name ends with an "y". For example a guy named "Dvorsky" would have a wife and/or daughter named "Dvorska"). I believe in Russia you add just "-a".

Can our Russian friends identify what units went to Lebanon? They don't appear to be from the Airborne or SF... I would have thought that Monsieur Putin would have sent a high profile unit to, "show the flag" as the Americans say.

Looks like Russia got new standard issue uniforms. They look all new and shiny, and more importantly they're all wearing a single camo pattern (which is something I haven't seen in Russian pics too often). I think it first showed up in a picture of Sergei Ivanov attending military exercises with Uzbekistan a few weeks ago.

No they are not comprised of convicts. Think about it, would Russia send soldiers with prison history to help a foreign nation?

Logically no. I guess convicts was the wrong word, but when he referred to them as "animals" that was the first thing that came to mind.

Logically no. I guess convicts was the wrong word, but when he referred to them as "animals" that was the first thing that came to mind.
He was joking. There is a joke, that stroibat soldiers (construction batalion) are so rough and violent that they don't need weapons as VDV and marines, because they can handle their enemies with a showel. :D
