It was demonstrated in the 80s for the US military. Does anyone have information on it?

Looks like it could be the M163 Vulcan Air Defense System

It also looks like a 20mm cannon found on a F-16 the m61

Knew that but I am wondering about the gun/chassis combo.

Check out the specs - I'm not sure really what you are specifically asking for.

Nice vehicle! The chassis looks good too.

That looks cool! They should have those rolling around urban Iraq. Looks like something out of a Sci-Fi movie. I've seen that gun system but on a different vehicle platform. Like Zone1 said, the M163.

Is it still used by the US? If so is it in the origina AAA role otherwise I could see a big potential for us in urban warfare using an armored chassis.

It proved its capabilities in the infantry support and anti-ambush role in Vietnam and Lebanon (in 1982). Awesome firepower!
It was replaced by the Hummer mounted Boeing Avenger system and the M6 Bradley Linebacker in US service. The Israelis have a modernised version called "Machbet". It also has a pod with 4xStingers and upgraded FCS. Other countries like Chile, Morocco, and more still use the basic version.

No it is not used by the US. That was a prototype of a vulcan based air-defense system on a type of chassis based on a 8x8 wheel drive vehicle(right off hand couldn't tell ya the name) it was used by the 9th Infantry division which was a testbed for the high tech motorized division at the time(for-runner to the stryker birgades)

this will cost a lot of collateral damage in an urban area! I don't really want to be on it's way...

The total damage will be far less than that caused by, say, a 120mm tank round though. And we are NOT talking in terms of APDS rounds, but a more suitable mix of HEI ans SAPHEI (mostly HEI) to reduce the risk of building overpenetration and the attendant danger of high collaterals should be considered. Just imagine this: A M6 Bradley Linebacker with the 25mm Bushmaster chain gun replaced by a Vulcan, and the Stingers by 70mm Hydra rockets, both dumb and APKWS laser guided ones. In short, a good (but not ideal, as it is still too lightly armored) urban assault vehicle, something along the lines of the Russian MT-LB based Scorpion series with its versatile weapons array.

you probebly saw these pictured in here:
http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weapons/vehicles/armored_personnel_carriers/m-113/Hovet.html
these are old IDF's M113 vulcan (nicknamed "Hovet").
a short range AA vehicle, which was upgraded with a stinger missiles in the mid 90's (nicknamed "Machbet").

http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weapons/vehicles/armored_personnel_carriers/m-113/machbet_4.jpg
they used these successfully against infentry snipers in buildings in the 1982 war in Lebanon. I think they also used some in the Defencive Shild op in 2002.
I guess they didnt use them in the second Lebanon war because they are poorly armored (well, its still an M113)...

they could put the turret of machbet in other more armored body like merkava chassis!

The thing we are forgetting is that it needs lots and lots of ammo! :-(
So either that must be available well armored somewhere in the tank. Or you would have to go and rearm somewhere. But I agree with this weapon for urban warfare. Would like to see it used against a building. Must be like a giant saw cutting thrue the whole building.
But why there arent any things like a FFAR pod on a tank? Never seen it on any tank, except the really purpose build rocket lauchers. I mean as a secondary weapon like a TOW on a bradley.
Does anybody have pics of anything alike?? :) woot
