An Aljazeera videotape has been broadcast on some of the major news channels, showing a group of Japanese civilians, initially blindfolded, captured by a group of Iraqi's.
During the course of the tape, the blindfolds were removed and the prisoners spoke, but it was not possible to hear what they were saying.
Edit The Iraqis responsible have issued a demand stating that Japan withdraws its forces in 3 days, or they will be killed.
(sorry if this has already been posted)

It has already been posted...but I say the Japanese take charge and respond with a even more aggresive action.

'We will burn them alive'
Iraqi militants are today threatening to burn three foreign hostages to death unless their country quits the US-led coalition.
Two Japanese men and one woman are being held by a previously unknown group which has vowed to kill them if Japanese soldiers do not leave Iraq. Elsewhere, seven South Koreans are being held hostage west of Baghdad by an unknown group, while a British man has been reported missing in the south.
The plight of the Japanese hostages - two aid workers and one journalist was revealed in dramatic video footage shown on al-Jazeera TV. It showed the three surrounded by masked gunmen, who claimed to be from Saraya al-Mujahideen, "the squadrons of holy warriors".
A written statement said: "Three of your sons have fallen in our hands. We offer you two choices: either pull out your forces, or we will burn them alive.
We give you three days starting the day this tape is broadcast."

You mean the US Army/US Marines coalition, right?
You mean the US Army/US Marines coalition, right?
the US is in the coalition, as well as all the other countries in iraq, who knows if it going to be a hostage rescue, they might even use GROM or the SAS.

My guess is that it will be a joint effort if a rescue op is to happen. American, British, Polish, etc. forces would probably all participate in various roles.

the japanese will never surrender thats why they got nuked
the japanese will never surrender thats why they got nuked
times change, "their" constitution doesn't allow them to have anything more than a defensive force, i don't think that the never surrender culture has survived american changes after WW2

"Joint" operations may be the politically correct decision, but it can often be an operational hindrance...unless said joint units have a history of successful joint training/operations...I say KISS

Maybe, maybe not.....What I have heard is that ethnic Japanese employees of Japanese companies are considered easy targets for kidnap/ransom exchanges.....because they can be quick to compromise their position.
It will be interesting to see how the Japanese government and the Japanese public handle this unfortunate situation.
And as Cut mentioned.......times have changed in Japan.

I agree completely, but I'm simply saying that a joint op is quite likely in the case of a rescue op.

a joint op wouldn't be too smart. The only way it might work is if the units involved would be ones that train together and share tactics on a regular basis. I can see delta, seals, sas, sbs because those units do interact on a regular basis (such as afghanistan) and they share a common language, but adding the poles, or another foreign language speaking unit might complicate things (not saying that the poles or anyone else r not good enough, from what i have heard GROM is an excellent unit)

Its not going to be a joint op. If intel finds their location, the jobs going to go to the nearest spec team thats equipped for the job.
yes, KISS is a mantra of special forces, and many military forces for that matter, all over the world. I apply it to all aspects of my life. Example: Never try to date more than one girl at same time, just KISS and date one. Never try to cook anything more complex than spaghetti or it will look like your kitchen got nuked, just KISS and ask your girl to do it after you bought her a really nice necklace. etc etc etc....
Oh yeah almost forget: Dont tune your sports car by adding a Greddy turbo system at 22 psi boost level (thats engine kill territory hehe but its also Ferrari and porsche kill territory), Nitrous oxide, lower it by 2 inches,, put 19" volks on it, add a cold air intake, reflash the ECU, install ICE system, install covert radar detection thorugh to front grill, change your gage cluster, put spacers in so your wheels mach to $3,000 vielside widebody you bought, and tint the windows to an illgal 20% tint all at the same time.....just KISS and do one mod at a time and test before doing another. Avoids engine blows and tickets.......hehe. Also costs a hell of alot of money that could have been used for other things, like emergencies or trips to Carribbean.............Sigh....
Oh yeah, and dont do all this to a $33,000 2003 Nissan 350 Z track that you have been saving up for about 4 years to get and ruin your warranty and resale value at the same time!!! Oh well, killing the local rich bald man with a mid life crisis who owns the ferrari 355 at a street race kinda makes all the pain suffering and money worth it....
not to mention I learned a hell of alot about cars doing this as I started with only rudimentary knowledge and did most of it myself with a buddies help...... and it was fun to spend a few days on weekends with buddies relaxing and working on eachothers cars....
Oh yeah almost forgot, I got my engine blue printed, balanced, and new forged cams/pistons put in (didnt do that myself hehe) and that allowed me to disable rev limiter on the engine and let it go up to 7,500 revs safely no problem (from a limited 6,500 max for the stock Z). I think I'm the only Z owner in my town with a car that has horsepower to match the name hehehehhehe. 351 wheel horsepower up from the stock of less than 276 whp (thats horsepower actually applied to the wheels and not at the flywheel people!!) and thats from a dyno run...... I dont think I can reliably do any more than this without spending mucho much $$$$....well I already spent mucho mucho $$ so maybe mucho mucho mucho mucho mucho $$$$$$...and its still fun to drive as a daily driver but any more HP and it would just be a race car for the street and very uncool to drive to grandma's....
