Combat Team Alpha soldiers work on their Australian Light Armoured Vehicles at Camp Terendak.

Soldiers from the Brisbane-based 6th Battalion of The Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR), conduct a tyre changing competition on Bushmaster Infantry Mobility Vehicles. Held between Combat Team Bravo platoons, soldiers compete against eachother for the prize of using the Commanding Officers car for a day. Each platoon is timed on the tyre change and then asked a series of questions on the Bushmaster to achieve a final overall score. The competition familiarizes soldiers with specifications of the Bushmaster as well as promoting "espirit de corps."

The mine weighing 15 kilos (33 pounds) was found in a Tamil area known as "Little Jaffna" in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo and defused by the bomb disposal squad. The discovery was made as a top Norwegian peace envoy, Jon Hanssen-Bauer, was visiting the capital in a bid to arrange talks between the government and Tamil Tiger guerrillas. Hanssen-Bauer's efforts to get the two sides to the peace negotiating table remain inconclusive. More than 60,000 people have been killed in three decades of ethnic bloodshed in Sri Lanka. The Turkish Airlines plane carrying more than 100 passengers from Tirana, Albania, to Istanbul, Turkey, was hijacked and landed at Italy's Brindisi airport on Tuesday. Turkish police identified the hijacker as Hakan Ekinci, a 28-year-old army deserter who fled to Albania in May and had stayed in a U.N. camp for refugees in Albania until his asylum request was denied and he was extradited to Turkey on Tuesday. Istanbul's governor Muammer Guler said Tuesday a Turkish army deserter who fled to Albania had commandeered a Turkish Airline plane to Italy alone and probably bluffed to pilots that he had a second accomplice on the plane. Earlier, Turkish officials said there were two hijackers, including Hakan Ekinci who was identified as a draft-deserter by Guler. Guler said Ekinci would have been detained for being a deserted had the plane landed at Istanbul. (AP Photo/Izmir Police Department Handout)

The real story you don't see is that the mix of uniforms in Iraq has become a real problem.

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Aug. 2 — The camouflaged Iraqi commandos who kidnapped 20 people from a pair of central Baghdad offices this week used Interior Ministry vehicles and left little trace of their true identities.

Were they legitimate officers? Members of a Shiite or Sunni death squad? Or criminals in counterfeit uniforms bought at the market?

Majid Hamid, 41, a Sunni human rights worker whose brother was kidnapped and killed by men in uniform four months ago, said he doubted that the answer would ever be known. Now, he said, the authorities normally trusted to investigate may be responsible for the crime.

“Whenever I see uniforms now, I figure they must be militias,” Mr. Hamid said in a recent interview. “I immediately try to avoid them. If I have my gun, I know I need to be ready to use it.”

Such is the attitude of Iraqis in this capital shellshocked and made fearful by violence that seems to be committed almost daily by men dressed as those who are supposed to protect and serve. The audacious kidnapping on Monday was just the latest case of men using the signals of law and safety — a uniform, a vehicle with blue lights, a patch on the sleeve — to attack and abduct.

Everywhere Iraqis in uniform go, from ice cream shops to checkpoints, people now flee. The mottled mix of green, blue and khaki camouflage, along with the blue shirts of the local police, have all blurred into a flag for alarm. “En eles,” Iraqis in Baghdad now say when a friend has been taken; in traditional Arabic it means chewed up, but in the streets it has come to mean taken by mysterious men without explanation.

American and Iraqi officials have been promising for weeks to address the problem. This week, the interior minister, Jawad Bolani, acknowledged that rogues were among his ranks. He told Parliament that new uniforms and identification cards would soon be supplied to hobble those “who carry out bad activities under the cover of this institution.”

The first 2,000 of 25,000 new uniforms are scheduled to be handed out later this month, officials said. Made with imported camouflage cloth and intricate patches and insignias, they are designed to be difficult to copy. Their source, as well as other details about them, is being kept secret in part to reduce the risk of counterfeiting. But only a small percentage of the 145,000 Interior Ministry officers — from the national police, public order brigades and other forces — will get them.

Arms swing in unison as the Iraqi Army’s newest soldiers march past a gallery of Iraqi and American officials during their graduation ceremony at Camp Habbaniyah Sept. 30. More than 300 soldiers went through five weeks of training to learn the fundamentals of marksmanship, urban patrols, and search and clear operations. A national recruiting initiative hopes to bring in 30,000 troops and support classes of 1,850 soldiers by May 2007, said Col. Joel P. Garland, the basic combat training liaison officer for Multi-National Force-West. The national initiative begins in October.

Interesting choice... M14 w/o any optics.

A couple questions:

1. Doesn't one have to be a designated marksman/sniper to be armed with an M14?
2. If so, is it typical to use iron sights? Even an EOTech sight would seem be preferrable for short range engagements.

Maybe this guy is one hell of shot w/o them.

But you4re right about that. Some people think it4s all about the gear; nice looking; but in the end if you can get the job done with it; it4s fine by me.

Good catch on the punisher emblem. I did miss the red paragraphs, must be color blind these days. Thanks he.

So how does that help things if only 25,000 Iraqi troops get them out of 145,000? If anything, that would add to the confusion.

Interesting choice... M14 w/o any optics.
Maybe this guy is one hell of shot w/o them.

Why not? Many of our soldiers wether it be an m4 or standard M16 prefer the high sight, or flip up version ring sights over scoped optics. Its all a matter of preference. The m14 presents the most accurate ghost rings built into a rifle. My buddy has one and at 300+ yards it hits with ease and perfection. Now as far as weapon assignment im not sure weather it comes down to designated marksman, or by choice.

I agree completely with the points about the utility of the iron sights and the legendary accuracy of the M14. I also understand and accept the premise of personal preference and that in some situations they would be desirable. Allow me a point of commentary: that it appears that most individuals that switch to the use modern optics (e.g., EOTech, Aimpoint, etc) even with a M14 don't opt to return to conventional sights.

Perhaps my questions were unclear. I was interested in the process by which one would obtain a M14 for regular use. Does one have to be a designated marksman/sniper or are the rules during wartime lax enough that anyone can make the choice for themselves? Finally, is it generally the case that there are a few M14 that have persisted in armories across the US Military which are now being put to good use or was a conscious (and IMO wise) decision made to bring them out of storage for OIF?

An unmanned reconnaissance plane seen burning in one of the main streets of the city of Kinshasa, Congo, Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006. An unmanned reconnaissance plane used by European forces helping provide security in Congo crashed in the capital Tuesday, killing one person on the ground and injuring two others, an official said. It was the second drone crash in Kinshasa in the past four months. (AP Photo/John Bompeng)

We still don't know why it fell," said Col. Thierry Fusalba, spokesman for the European Union force helping to maintain peace in Congo as the war-torn Central African country establishes its first democratic government in decades.

He added that the Belgian craft crashed as it was taking off, meaning it could have been a technical problem. The plane fell onto a Kinshasa boulevard, killing one person and injuring two others, he said.

In July, a Belgian drone crashed when it was on a test flight over Kinshasa, injuring five people in what officials originally said might have been a technical problem. A later investigation found the plane was shot down, Fusalba said

:) :)

:) :) Hahahahahaha

But you4re right about that. Some people think it4s all about the gear; nice looking; but in the end if you can get the job done with it; it4s fine by me.Whats wrong with it? I agree if you are not able to do it with the basic fundementals you dont belong in the job, but when we got our deployment equipment it was like kids in toy store.

Finally, is it generally the case that there are a few M14 that have persisted in armories across the US Military which are now being put to good use or was a conscious (and IMO wise) decision made to bring them out of storage for OIF?

drgamtd it depends on quanity, role and how your unit and armorer designate weapons and accessories. you do not have to be a designated marksman for you to be given such equipment. one of my NCO's had an entire Platoon with M14's in 25th ID.

crazy to see Haitians with M14s and ruger mini14s weapons get around the world and depending on regions and organizations some are easier to come by then others.

The U.S. military unveiled a new uniform for Iraq's national police that will be difficult to copy -- a move aimed at preventing insurgents, death squads and common criminals from impersonating officers.

The new bluish-gray uniform, presented to reporters by Maj. Gen. Joseph Peterson, is similar to that worn by U.S. soldiers but with the Iraqi flag embedded in the fabric's print. It will be issued beginning in October.

High sight? Do you mean the carry handle sight. By flip up ring sights do you mean the standard aperture sights, both the .230 inch and the .190 "small aperture". What is a "scoped optic"? Its either a scope which usually predicates something with magnification or it is an optic. Optics include both magnified and non magnified or CCO (close combat optics) systems such as the Aimpoint and Eotech.

I thought the main way insurgents gotgear was from deserters of the army , like when marines sent iraqi troops into fallugah with brand new ak's , most of em deserted :bash:and the marines had to fight both insurgents and deserters with new ak's .

Seems like this is going to be another failed initiative, i hope not,

any one else have info, opinions? the quanity of weapons/munitions of various kinds in Iraq is scary and is not to hard to come upon.

it is not exactly deserters but those who belong to whoever pays the most, uniforms and government ID's are very useful for the insurgents and they are willing to pay for the ability to use them.

the whole point of the Fallujah Offensive was to kill/ detain all those who opposed the coalition and not to allow a stronghold for the enemy, so if they opposed we were happy to face them then instead of now. A new AK and old one which is cared for by its owner are the same thing, it is a very reliable weapon.

the problem of loyalty to the Coalition is very concerning for the Coalition and there are no simple ways to solve it unfortunetly. :(

"The situation is stable and negotiations are underway," a policeman told reporters at the scene in comments broadcast on news radio TSF. Some more on the bank robbery. It ended after negotiations with the robber failed after 13 hours and police made a tactical assault. Robber arrested and hostages freed without any injury. No shots were fired. The robber asked for a ransom. He had a handgun and a false bomb and made the threat to use them.

This is not good!.....from the grapevine filtering through. :(

Below is from SCGs Early Bird today, could be the same incident:

"War does not determine who is right, war determine who is left."

Today's Early Bird Brief is dedicated to the memory of Rod "K-2" Richardson, a friend who will be sorely missed. Rod was killed this week while working in Bagdad on a security detail. Rod and I were in the State Department's first class of contractors for the newly revamped Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program. He was a Marine and a great operator. Rod was an avid outdoorsman, hence his callsign "K-2". He loved climbing, hiking, and hunting but most of all he was a patriot. He was fun to be around and was a consumate operator. Our prayers at SCG International are with his family. Please see the In Memoriam section below.

IN MEMORIAM: ROD "K-2" RICHARDSON

K2 was working security in Baghdad. While leaving a venue they exited via a different route than they entered. Rod (K-2) noted on the radio that the "streets are empty, that's odd" and seconds later they were hit with an IED, believed to be an EFP (explosively formed penetrator).

The front seat PSD members were killed instantly, Rod was mortally wounded and a second backseat passenger lost both his legs. The other two vehicles consolidated on the downed vehicle, extracted the wounded and dead. They were taking small arms fire throughout from people dressed as IPs. The up gunners engaged numerous enemy. They moved to the IZ where Rod was ****ounced DOA.

"Heist" is accompanying Rod from Baghdad to CONUS. "Tank" will accompany them to Dover, the home of record of our friend.

As a fellow classmate put it, ". . . there are no words to express what we feel. It has been a honor and privilege to work with such a fine man. We all owe our lives to some extent to his willingness to share tactics and life's lessons freely. Stay the course, he loved all of us and has expressed many times how much he values the time spent with warriors. Last year when we took such a hard hit in Mosul he stated 'God is an awesome tail gunner'.

That statement gives some indication as to what was most important to Rod Richardson. No one knows when our time will come - make peace with those who offended you, or that you've offended and get your relationship with God in order. Rod was a great example. Let's not forget it.

RIP, and Thank You for Your service, Sir

Yes mate, the same incident, I have a mate who has just crossed over to the company who were hit,so it was a time of anguish, thankfully he was not involved, but sadly 2 other Americans were Killed.

The Kurds in the team who were providing back up, took the fight back to the bad guys, and killed a handful, they extracted the KIA and WIA.

RIP "Bear" and "K2"

I believe the patch is a fake. It's been added to the pic. The patch should be in this pic from left to right not from up to down. The shape is strange too.
The patch is great for use BTW. Looks cool.
