Remember THIS (http://tv.ksl.com/index.php?sid=16500&nid=6)? Still impresive (if true which I highly doubt) that this old peasant farmer shot down an AH-64D Longbow Apache with his old 'n' rasty Gra bolt action rifle. Also found a report HERE (http://funreports.com/2003/04/02/45447.html).

Does a "bird VS helicopter contact", resulting a helicopter shot down, also counts?

Just wondering, did they use real blackhawks for the shot down scenes in the movie?

While SOAR did support the movie, the aircraft that crashed were all CGI.

Actually I know some of the folks from a couple of those hawk crashes. The one in Hawaii was really a sad deal. Of course none of them are laughing matters.

So it's impossible to shoot down an Apache with one shot from a rifle? You might think so, but you'd be wrong, all it takes is one "magic BB" in the right spot. I'm not saying that it happened like this as the Iraqis claimed at the time, but it is not out of the realm of possibility.

no pictures but a movie. notice how low the helicopter is flying :cantbeli: the helicopter did crash because pilot error :-(

A Lithuanian Mil Mi-2 helicopter (LY-HCS), based in Sweden, struck a street lamp and crashed while attempting to take off from an old people's home in Heby, near Sala. Six people were on board and one of them, a 100 years old man who got the flight as a birthday gift, died at the hospital a few days later. The accident is being examined by the Swedish Accident Investigation Board.

So where do you have to aim?

So where do you have to aim?

In the general direction of your target, I suppose. The only way to do it is pure luck. The only way to "aim" at a spot on a helicopter would be if it was parked on the ground and all of the access panels were taken off...and you were about 10 feet away.

A little bit off topic question, but how long of a burst would be needed from a Shilka or Gepard to shoot down a helo?

That probably depends on where they hit the plane, dont you think?

Slightly off topic, but wasn't there a MIG 29 shot down with a single 9mm round from a handgun, in Africa, a freak shot of course, plus the MIG is no SU25 in the armour stakes.

My apologies. The aircraft was never able to be inspected to determine what brought it down. The aircraft did not crash or autorotate, it just made a "precautionary landing" . Meaning, something was wrong with it and the pilots chose to land it while it was still flyable. They must have thought that something was bad enough with some system that they would not be able to make it back to base. I don't know if we'll ever see a debrief from the pilots, so maybe we'll just never know what actually happened.

This particular aircraft was loaded onto a truck by the Iraqis and taken to Baghdad, where it was spotted by a UAV and destroyed by an Air Force strike.

As has been said before, it depends. In fact, it depends wildly, since one shot could take it down, or maybe it could take a hundred hits before it came down. And maybe the one shot could have been the first shot fired, and maybe to get one hundred hits took 5000 shots.

But hey, I'll answer this way. If every round from the burst was guaranteed to hit the aircraft, then it would take about half a second.
