The one the Iwo Jima monument was based on from Life magazine. Yeah, I know all about the first pic and all. But it's a great photo.

Personally, I've always been partial to these two of the Marines storming Tarawa Atoll.

A truly spectacular image. In the heat of the moment - Indian soldiers storm a German trench, after exploding it with hand grenades. Circa 1945.

The frantic convulsive movements of Pakistani tanks caught in the open by Hunters from the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the battle of Longewala. The insert shows three destroyed Pakistani tanks.

The famous reconnaissance picture of Pak Army tank tracks in the sand around Longewala. The Pak Army T-59 MBTs were circling to avoid being hit by IAF Hunters and to raise dust to provide cover. This was taken from a PR Canberra flown by Wing Commander R.S. Benegal and now adorns the enclosure at the VIP entrance of Vayu Bhavan.

I'm surprised that no one's posted this one yet. It's probably one of the most famous American photographs of WWII. I think it pretty much sums what it means to be an infantryman in combat better than any other photo I've seen.

Death Valley, Okinawa
Private First Class Paul Ison dashed through Okinawa's Death Valley three times during the WWII battle to help capture the Japanese Island, and survived. He couldn't beleive he made it but a Marine Corps combat photographer provided this proof.
It happened in an instant, a brief moment in the madness of war that is remembered and revered. On a terible day during WWII, a man fighting to survive became a symbol of what it's like to be a soldier.
Paul Ison was running into the belly of the beast of war, bullets and mortar flying all around as he struggled to reach his men across a barren piece of land appropriately called "Death Valley". As he made his way, a combat photographer emerged from a fox hole to snap his picture, capturing an image that to this day continues to define the courage and grit of those who fight for our freedom.
The photo is the second most popular used by the Marine Corps, the first being our previous spotlight, "the flag raising at Iwo Jima".
