Do you have pics of the polish AF exercising landing and take off from highways? I know when Germany still had its MIGs they used to exercise that together.

No, AFAIK Polish Air Force stooped using road airstrips in early 90s.

We have lots of abandoned Airfields (including one used by Soviets stationing in Poland).

Hmm.... what should I post next? More combat jets (Su-22M4, F-16C/D)? Tansport aircrafts (An-26, C-295M, M-28)? Trainers (PZL-130, TS-11)?

You are probably right, but you must admit that role of DOLs was marginalized.
yes we don't need them anymore, in case of bigW our AF can operate from for egzample Germany if we loose all airstrips, we are in NATO so number of airfields to rebase our planes is realy big.

Well it was Sunday and I managed to do something instead of go and drink myself :P

In fact it didn't took so many time - you can list aircrafts by serial number on lotnictwo.net and airliners.net - this makes work much easier.

Barberán, Vice President Sales at EADS Military Transport Aircraft Division, have signed today, in the presence of Spanish Ambassador in Warsaw, Rafael Mendivil Peydro, a new contract to provide Polish Air Force with two additional C-295 military transport aircraft. In August 2001, Poland purchased eight (8) C-295, from which last delivery took place in July 2005.

Antonio R. Barberán said during the signing ceremony: “We would like to thank and congratulate Polish Air Force for its professionality, and to specially mention the 6.000 flight hours in different missions under the most demanding and hard conditions performed with the C-295 in areas that extend from the Middle East to the Far East”

Poland is the first export customer for C-295 which repeats with new acquisitions (recurrent customer).

Thanks to excellent and flexible products, close collaboration with the customers and first class in-service support, EADS CASA has gained the confidence of many operators worldwide that have increased their fleet with new orders.

EADS CASA is the world leader in light and medium weight aircraft. The CN-235 and C-295 accumulate one million flights with more than 900.000 flight hours in five continents. The C-295 is in operation with air forces from Poland, Jordan, Algeria, Finland and Spain, and orders from Brazil and Portugal will soon start being delivered. Compared to its competitors, it is the only aircraft in its category that has been operated in real war scenarios like in the Balkans , Irak, or Afghanistan.

Some info about Our F-16s:

The first four aircraft that will be delivered - #4042, #4043, #4044 and #4077 (3rd, 4th and 5t one-seater and 2nd two-seater) are already in Europe in Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany (base of USAF 52nd Fighter Wing using F-16 and A-10). Two of them will fly Poland tomorrow, and the other two the day after tomorrow to their new home - Poznań-Krzesiny Airbase (base of 3rd and 6th TFS flying F-16s).

Yesterday (7.11) four F-16 has flown out of the US over Atlantic. Two of them (F-16C #4042 and F-16D #4077) has flown to US Air Base in Spangdahlem, Germany. And will fly to Poland tomorrow (9.11) on official ceremony.
The other two (F-16C #4043 and #4044) had some problems with air refueling and had landed on Iceland. Today (8.11) those planes had flown Poland with refueling pit stop on RAF Leuchars Air Base, UK. The planes landed in Poland around 3 p.m. assisted by two MiG-29.

I think that w need to get used to new planes before sending them anywhere - first squadron on F-16 - the 3 elt (3rd TFS) should be full combat ready in 2009.

49 pilots will be trained in US. We definitely need some advanced trainers but there was no decision yet - so for the time being we got only PZL TS-11 Iskra and PZL-130 Orlik.

Aermacchi M-346 was on trials in Demblin not so long ago and Aermacchi has proposed a deep cooperation in production so this could be a choice. The T-38C Talon is also possible. Most likely it will be one of those two.

To answer your question; Well, I really wanted to build a Polish Fitter. The original decal-set didn't came with the Polish roundels, so I ordered a special decal-set. The Fitter will now be registered as '7307'.

Nothing. It is going to be officially started by the end of this year.
The difference is that there won't be one big auction for all services but each service will buy helos on their own (different requirements).
For example - air paramedic will buy 23 helos (most likely Eurocopters).
Army is going to buy about 60 helos (Mi-17-size).

Also Sikorsky is going to buy PZL Mielec factory and start manufacturing Blackhawks there. The deal is expected to be finished at the begining of next year. It can have influence on the army's order.

0301 - PZL M-28B Bryza TD (s/n: AJG003-01) - it is a first Bryza with PT engines, the aircraft was not yet delivered (the pictures were taken in PZL-Mielec). This one and other M-28B (AJG003-02 - 0302) are expected to be delivered 2007. The aircrafts will have aperture used to calibrate airfields navigation systems (earlier An-26 were used for that task but as those aircrafts are expected to be retired soon a replacement was need).

The ordered copters will be for training only (to replace aging fleet of Mi-2). Land Forces aren't interested in SW-4 (as usual - W-3 was bought for Air Cavalry long after W-3 was used by Polish Air Force and Navy and exported to Myanmar and Czech Rep.), so armed SW-4 is a proposal for export only (at least for now). It is more possible that W-3 will be used as armed reconesance copter - not the SW-4 :cantbeli:

All I know that courent SW-4 has to weak engine to carry some serious payload. I also know that PZL-Świdnik currently is planning to equip SW-4 with more powerful engine Rolls-Royce Allison 250-C30 (557 shp) instead of current Rolls-Royce Allison 250-C20R (450 shp). The two engine variant was also planed but the amount of changes will be so big that PZL-Świdnik couldn't develop it without financial support from MOD or some other source.

There were some information’s about "głuszec" program focused to create fully digital avionics system (fully integred mission computer, glass cockpit with MFD, HUD on armed variants etc) to be used on polish aircrafts (primarily on W-3 Sokół but M-28 and SW-4 applications are also considered). The details of this program are still unknown, but usage of some elements of this program in modernization of M-24W copters ("pluszcz" program) is also possible. About "pluszcz" all we know that something was done with 2 copters from 56 PŚB - it is still unsure will it be a simple overhaul and light modernization (GPS, TACAN and NVG) or big modernization with MFD, new ATGMs etc

There also were some rumors about SW-5 - the possible W-3 replacement - but it is still unknown how it will look like and if it will be designed with cooperation with Agusta (some AW-139 variant) or if it will be a full in depended project (remember that PZL-Świdnik has experience from designating SW-4, głuszec program and co-designating AW-139 and AW-149).

Remember that those are only my speculations (based on good sources but still speculations).

Those eyes were symbol of Polish helos . Why they are "forbidden" I don't know. For me this is stupid.
Also totally stupidity was scrapping all Floggers whilst they had more potenial than Fishbeds and the 28 PLM wa sthe best unit in Poland....


Maybe those aren't the most sofisticated attack planes on the world..but they are badasses, and they look like real beauty in polish markings....;)

This is photo of #77 the first emblem is on ALMOST ;) every Mig from 1st ELT,it is a historical emeblem of 7 sqadron "Kościuszkowskiej" in which during Polish-Bolszewick war flown american pilots.This is a historical emblem of 1 plm which was created after mentioned war. This emeblem was also a emblem of 303 squadron who fought in Battle of Britain- this is a tradition of 1 ELT.
Second one is a personal emblem of pilot - in this case TOYO...p-)

Like be-HIND-eyes has said this is emblem of sqadrons by the name of Tadeusz Kościuszko (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tadeusz_Kościuszko). This or symilar symbols were used by:

- 7th Sqadron during Polish-Bolszewick War
- 303rd Fighter Squadron durng WWII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._303_Polish_Fighter_Squadron) (Josef František was flying in this unit)
- 2nd squadron of 1st Fighter Regiment in 90s
- 1st Tactical Fighter Sqadron

1st squadron of 1st Fighter Regiment was first unit rearmed in MiG-29 in 1989, in 1994-5 2nd squadron received ex-Czech MiG-29s (switching from MiG-21MF). In 2001 1st Fighter Regiment was reorganized into 1st Tactical Fighter Squadron and 23rd Air Base (to meet NATO standards). Shortly after that commander of 1 TFS decided that new squadron should switch to old historical emblem - the one you see on the picture.

If you say so, but I find it hard to believe NO Polish pilot has said Nothing yet. After all we all know how pilots like to brag.

Polish military authorities do not encourage pilots to make internal competition which one is better. That's a good attitude, IMHO. Pilots serve to country not to specific plane. Every airforce squadrons have their own duty to be accomplished. As far as for now, Polish F-16 are in implementation stage. Polish MIG's pilots protect our airspace so far...

Well, the MiG pilots (especially from 1 elt) prefer MiG-29, the F-16 pilots prefer F-16s but nobody make statements like "we are better" o something (we are not Americans), only "I like my aircraft". Our MiG-29 were made 1988-90 and that makes them almost 20 years older then our F-16s (and everybody understand what it means). One of the most experienced pilots from 1 elt ("Toyo") had opportunity to fly MiG-29M2/MRCA and he had very positive feelings for this aircraft.

I don't know if you remeber Gen. Gotowala, he had a chance to fly an F-16, a MiG-29 and Su-27. He'd said that the Russian planes are more maneuvrable but the F-16 is much easier to fly. He said that something like 10 years ago so doesn't apply to the present pilots. I agree 100% with the guys above that it'll take time and excercises to evaluate and see the differences in both aircraft construction.

I also have a question, this is not meant to flame, Since the Polish Air Force flys both Eastern and Western aircraft has there been any feed back from the pilots as to which they prefer, or is it to early to make judgments. As I said not a flame, lets face it the Polish Air Force and its pilots are in a unique place to make comparisons.
Yeah it's true - we have an unique possibility to compare those two planes but for now it's just to early for any conclusions.
F-16 pilots are beginning their combat training and there was no joint MiGs/Falcons exercise so far. You have to also remeber that MiGs pilots are much more experienced (especially from 1st ELT, based in Minsk Mazowiecki), they've been flying 29s for years while Falcons pilots are still 'fresh'.
I'm also curious about the outcome of first exercise dogfights.
One thing is sure - they will be very sharp;)

They're going crazy with buying those CASA C-295, 12 is a decent number. We will receive 5 C-130's, but we should consider to buy a few of these instead of just purchasing more CASA; 5 C-130 is not enough we need to buy 5 more at least.

In late 90s the program of improving close and short range air defenses was started. This program led to development of Umbrella System and it's elements:
- Rega command system
- Grom MPSAM
- modernization of S-60 guns making them 100% remotely controlled
- modernization of ZU-23-2 with new electrical gun propulsion, new sights and optional double Grom luncher
- 4x4 based Grom luncher with guiding system (known as a Poprad)
- MMSR radar

This system was sold to Indonesia under the name of Cobra.

This program also led to development of:
- PZA Loara antiaircraft tank
- modernization of close range ZSU-23-4 Shilka (ZSU-23-4MP Biała)
- modernization of short range Osa-AKM

F-16 crash lands in Warsaw
11.03.2008 14:10 An F-16 had to make an emergency landing at the Warsaw Fryderyk Chopin airport at midday, Tuesday.

Colonel Wiesław Grzegorzewski, the spokesman for the Polish Air Forces, is quoted by TVN24 as saying the decision to make the emergency landing was taken after the pilot informed ground control of engine problems.

According to eyewitnesses, the fighter jet landed about 1 km from the beginning of the runway. One of the three F16s, was on its way to the Krzesiny airbase near Poznan in western Poland.

Poland purchased 48 aircraft from Lockheed Martin as part of a multi- billion dollar offset deal signed in 2002.
