I'm filling out the FAFSA for next semester so I can do workstudy on campus. How long is the process?
Does anybody know?

I hope it's not too long. The workstudy funds around here go fast.

Ditto in California. Each University (at least in the UC system) is allotted X-amount of funds for work study programs seperate from the funds made available to employees of the university. Thus, the university will take work-study kids as much as possible, that way the funds saved from the employee account can be re-directed into something else....like new computers for faculty and staff. Thus, if you are NOT work-study, your chances of getting a job on campus are close to nill. I know a guy who applied to 8 different jobs and each one turned him down to hire a work-studies student.
And, of course, being a white, middle class male means I qualify for jack **** when it comes to financial aide. Instead it goes to blacks and latinos....ya know, the "oppressed" people who could not pass a high school exit exam but were graduated anyways because the schools in southern California are over crowded as is with immigrants who can't speak english.
So I got a job with the UC Police Department who have a completely different bank account than the UC Universities. ;)

I want to join SMCC Security, but I was told earlier this semester that I had to be on financial aid in order to even be considered. So I'm jumping through that hoop now. Joy.

For future reference:
Always put that you are attending school in summer, that way your school earmarks $$$ for you in the fall when you get your award letter (unless you have no intention of going to summer school). If you decide not to, its alot easier to not get it than to jump thru all the hoops and not get jack.

if you 'need' to take out a loan, try not to. :| i know that for myself the worst thing i can do is take out a loan to pay for my undergrad and medical education and then be $120,000+ in debt by the time i graduate from med school.
so be leery of what FAFSA offers...

My major is only a two-year programme, and the tuition is only around two thousand a year, not including room and board. Compared to some other kids I graduated from high school with, I've got it made as it is. I just want to able to workstudy, that's why I'm applying for FAFSA.
Now, if I wanted to take the next step and transfer my credits to USM after graduation, I would be more concerned with the loans part. But that's not in my plans just yet, although my plans are usually quick to change.
This is what I'm shooting for right now:
-Bachelor's in Criminal Justice
-Dual citizenship
-Foreign military service
-Maine Warden Service
That's over the next few years, obviously. I'm leaning strongly towards going back to school at some point in the above timeline for a paramed degree.

Umm... paramed is for EMTs last I knew. They usually get a degree to get bumped up a level. There are EMT1, EMT2, and EMT3 in terms of training, and I think that a degree is required to get advanced training.
This http://www.rfaas.org/EduLev.html will tell you more about that. My dad was an EMT3 with Gray Rescue, as well as a Lieutenant with CCSO. It's the sort of thing that I'm looking at for myself.

Talk to your school's outdoor rec program (if your school has one). I know every year they would do a week long wilderness first responder course (in conjuction with other outdoor groups). However, I could never tear myself away during the middle of winter term to go do said course (and it was 450$).
