Supplying troops with potable water is a logistical nightmare in the parched Iraqi desert. But a new technology that creates water literally from air might solve the problem, and save billions of dollars in the process.

Sounds good. Anyone have any first hand info on this device? Does it live up to its promises? Does the 30 cent a gallon include the inital cost of purchase?

If it does it will not only save the military a lot of money but it can also save a lot of lifes in disaster areas.

You can buy a "water-from-thin-air machine" for your house, it's called a dehumidifier. Check this link form Sears. The differnt pint sizes are the amount you will have to dump out once it fills.

Ha, I was getting ready to say the same thing.

I'm somehow skeptical that potable water can be made in the environment with Humidity levels of about 2% - note the article mentions sandbox as its target! Given non-desert environment, one can trap condensation with a plastic sheet and a cup - no such luck in the desert as there is negligible amount of water in the air to begin with!

Iraq has an average humidity of around 20-23%. Up near 60-70% in the winter months.

Rain is also "water from thin air". What I was interested in was the cost.

Most likely way more than it should do. They charge a fortune for simply pumping it out the River Tigris and serving it raw to the troops, this just seems a good way to make more money.
