Looks like the U.S. Navy SEALs just got a brand new tool for the War on Terror. The boys at NSWC Crane (Crane Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane, Indiana) have apparently been busy little beavers -- one of the projects they've been working on is a little .50 BMG (12.7x99mm) bad boy, the AS50 Semi-Automatic Rifle, and it's the result of NSWC Crane's teaming with Accuracy International (AI).
The objective in building this rifle was simple: with the increasing number of missions U.S. SEALs are facing that require rapid engagement of multiple targets with explosive or incendiary ammunition at extended range, an ergonomically sound, light, durable, easily transportable semi-auto anti-materiel rifle was needed. And, oh yes, accurate as well, with a Minute of Angle (MOA) of at least 1.5 (which translates to being accurate within 1.5 inches per every 100 yards of distance).
So here comes the AS50 semi-auto. How well does it fulfill the requirements listed above? Let's check it out.
Fast Assembly, Accurate Shooting
DefenseReview recently had the chance to handle (and lift) this weapon at its SHOT Show 2005 debut, and was surprised at how light it felt, for a semi-auto .50 caliber rifle. At approximately 27 pounds empty/dry weight (according to the AI representative at their booth), the AI AS50 is relatively lightweight. One of the photos DefRev caught at SHOT shows...
http://www.military.com/pics/SoldierTech_AS50-3.jpg
100-meter accuracy: The results when the AI AS50 takes multiple shots at targets from 100 meters away.
... three targets, each shot at 100 meters (see photo at right). On all three targets, all the rounds are touching.
The Accuracy International (AI) AS50 Semi-Auto Rifle was designed specifically for U.S. military Special Operations (SPECOPS) personnel/snipers. More specifically, it was designed for the U.S. Navy SEALs to provide them with anti-materiel/long-range interdiction capability, combined with fast follow-up shot capability, in a combat-rugged, lightweight weapons package that can be assembled and broken down quickly and easily, and maintained easily. Although the AS50 rifle was designed specifically for Naval SPECWAR end-users, DefenseReview has no doubt that other elements of SOCOM (USSOCOM) will be taking a good look at AI's latest .50 caliber creation. We wouldn't be surprised if U.S. NSWDG (U.S. Navy DevGroup) and certain U.S. Army Special Forces units out of Ft. Bragg, NC and Ft. Campbell, KY were already field testing the AS50 on enemy insurgents, in the Sandbox.
The following is from the AI AS50 Semi-Automatic Rifle brochure:
"For deployment and storage, the stock can be detached (and refitted) in seconds ... The entire system can be separated into its major components in under 3 minutes! All parts are fully interchangeable and the rifle can be field-serviced without so much as a screwdriver."
Sounds pretty good. As if that's not enough, the AI rep at the SHOT Show booth told us that the AS50 semi-auto .50 BMG rifle creates less felt recoil than their AW50 bolt-action .50 BMG rifle (http://www.defensereview.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=339). Back in July 2003, DefenseReview wrote a quick blurb (http://www.defensereview.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=339) on the AI AW50 (33-35 lbs empty, depending on reports) and AW50FT (a reported 28 lbs, approx.) .50 BMG bolt-action rifles.
Some more details on the AS50 semi-auto .50 Cal.:
Rear grip: The rear grip is easily deployed, and also serves as a rear support leg. It also locks in folded position for transport or different shooting techniques.
Cocking Lever: To reduce the risk of snagging, the AS50 features an easily replaceable low-profile cocking lever.
Safety Lever: Easily accessible from the shooting position, the two-stage safety mechanism physically blocks the trigger.
http://www.military.com/pics/SoldierTech_AS50-2.jpg
Terrorists, beware -- you may soon be facing the wrong end of this weapon (Accuracy International AS50 Semi-Automatic Rifle).
Safety interlock: This feature prevents the rifle from being disassembled with the safety lever in the "locked" position.
Receiver: Machine from alloy steel, the rigid receiver body has an integral MIL-STD 1913 rail for mounting ancillary fire control devices.
Magazine capacity: 5 rounds for the AS50. The magazine is the detachable box type.
Bipod: The height-adjustable bipod rotates around the centerline of the barrel, allowing for a stable shooting position at all times.
Forward grip: Machined from high-grade aluminum, the grip protects the user from extreme heat, and features three integral MIL-STD 1913 rails - one on each side for accessories, and a sight rail extension for night sights and thermal imagining systems.
Muzzle brake: The muzzle brake has a low flash signature and is designed to minimize ground disturbance and felt recoil to allow rapid follow-up shots.
AI's focus is to combine match-grade accuracy with military-application reliability and ruggedness, and it looks like it just might have succeeded with the AS50.

Is 1.5 MOA really good for a .50 Cal semi-auto rifle? Unless it's using some crap ammo, of course - like pulled out of a M2's belt and not specialty sniper load...
As for DREAD - the video of its projectiles impacting look like buckshot - 120,000 shots per minute my arse! And if each projectile is travelling 1/3 of an inch interval - how come the impact groups are inches apart? 2 thousand lead balls travelling travelling through the air at 8000 fps in a seconds time without a sound... Or heat... I especially like the round projectiles - welcome back to the 16th Century... Maybe they'll make square bullets to use against the muslims.
And what? No Carbine sized Railgun? I'm getting nothing but coals this year!

The Long Range Rifle System also includes CheyTac tactical computer (commercial PDA with CheyTac ballistic software), Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X scope, and Kestrel 4000 wind/temperature/atmospheric pressure sensors, linked to the PDA. The Tactical Computer with sensors and internal ballistic database provides all necessary data for long range fire. CheyTac papers state that the entire System is capable to deliver sub-MOA accuracy at the ranges of up to 2500 yards (2270 meters)
with simrad NVS........and about 50,000 rounds :)

There's a bunch of them on Gunbroker(the Ebay of the Gunworld).
Break out the gold card or have someone break out theirs!!!
I've got to say that I like this optics rail setup the best. The others with a wedge spacing between them and the upper seem like a brush catching nightmare to me.
An Aimpoint M3 in a Larue mount on the rail would make it about perfect. Maybe Ritdye the polymer body black and spray it down in a tiger stripe pattern with some Brownell's Alumahyde II.

I am thining about it, since the most expensive thing there is the Monaro. Good HK GTS' can get around $20,000 to $40,000 Depending on condition, ie: original, or restored to original. Even crappy ones get upwards of $15,000.
Wont see the .44 automag, as handguns .40 and over are banned, the L2A1, being selectfire, is banned, the quad bike fully kitted in the pic is around $16,000, so i'm hoping a hooligan tool will be under the chrissy tree this year. (Only around $350)

Sod it. Sell the house/children/wife buy the car, quad bike, hooligan bar and gun. Rob the bank using said equipment then use the car and/or the quad bike as a get away vehicle. You can then use the money to buy the house and kids back. Buying the wife back is optional as you will now be rich beyond your wildest dreams so you could purchase yourself a newer/younger model? p-)

I miss those days terribly! Wacking on a 30rnd mag and going nuts at the range or out hunting! Then turning the gas up to 10 before handing it over to someone esle! Nasty!

Dear Santa;
I have been asking for this for years. I have been ecceptionally good this year. I have not kicked the cat and have said, "yes mam" to the wicked old witch next door.
I have picked up my empty beer cans and have recycled them as they should be. I have not driven my 4 x 4 on my neighbor's yard and flower garden this year, doing broddies.
I had my yard car finally towed off to make the wife's family happy. I no longer take my wife kid sisters for long rides at night.
So please,,, can I get my A 10 wart hog this year.....
Love
Bubba,
CC to wife.

ahhhhhh..........all is not lost :)
you have a handgun as large as the .500 S&W if you are apart of a Metallic Silhouette Shooting club, and if you can be stuffed, you can get a L2A1 fixed semi auto, 10 round box magazine with a category D licence (destruction of large vertebrae pests)
just depends on how bad you want those toys :-D

didn't know about the shooting club stuff, and am sure i could find a farmer neding someone with a feral animal problem! But have been busy the last few years and dont get to go shooting much. Might have to take it up again. The quad, hooligan tool and HK Monaro would be more useful though.

well a mate of mine was determined to get his beloved SLR back, so he got a Category D licence (self loading centrefire) and he goes on regular trips to back the big stuff like camel and donkey.
getting the automag or whatever is alot easier, though you have to do a minimum of 2 shoots a month........

Awesome! It's a great language. You should visit Poland sometime, if you haven't already, because it is a great country!

Sure it may not be the best vacation spot, but I feel a lot more at home than I would in say, Turkey or China :) Plus, we don't have to pay for hotels (most of the time that is ;))
