According to a report on The Middle East Media Research Institute, Apple's NY Fifth Avenue store has been slammed by "an Islamic website" as a "new insult to Islam".

The reason? Well, it resembles the Muslims' sacred Ka'ba, situated in the Masjid al-Haram mosque in Mecca:

Apple's Fifth Avenue Store and the Ka'ba

The "Islamic website" claims that since the offending structure is known as the "Apple Mecca", and "contains bars selling alcoholic beverages", it constitutes "a blatant insult to Islam". The site accordingly calls on Muslims to spread the word in the hope that "Muslims will be able to stop the project".

Sadly, it's a bit late for that, since the store opened for business back in May. We do have some good news, though. As far as we're aware it's not called the "Apple Mecca", it does not serve alcoholic beverages, and neither Jack Straw nor Salman Rushdie work behind the counter. ®

So I guess giving them nothing should work best? Or would a 7.62mm at a cyclic rate of 3000 per minute be better? Would it make them want more? Sure hope so...

As you might have figured it out, I lack political correctness, I have none, I want none, since I honestly belive, it's totaly and completely overrated.

I hope I didn't break anyone's concentration p-)

Ok, now I've gone too far. I feel bad about that. Really. It's over the top, and I apologize sincerely. It was in poor taste, insensitive, and lacking in civility. Were it not for my collection of apostle butt plugs, Buddah strap-on and atheist sex jelly, I would feel even worse for such an intemperate and loutish display of vulgarity.

Has anyone bothered to look into what offends our own precious fundie christians? Basicly Everything (at least everything that might be considered even remotely fun/sin or secular...). The difference is that christian fundie word actually has some weight over here compared to ME muslim reactions.

Uno: I dont think Apple called it the apple mecca, it was done by media.

Dos: Mecca is slang for center, the 'Mecca Inc' of clothing, microsoft is the mecca of software, etc... Just cause Rastafarians, along with Christians use the Lion of Judah as a symbol, Jews are not "deeply offended", and dont hold your breath for Jewish riots.

It doesnt look like Mecca while being constructed, mecca looks like it. The cube in mecca, by coincidence is also a cube, the sukhot is also a cube, white house...not a cube.

lol, I can certainly see how you would come to such a conclusion.

But the point is that no-one ever even thought about giving them "an inch" for the 200 years or so that they were oppressed and used by the rest of the world. It is no wonder now that such radical ideologies are developing there.

I do not agree with Islamism, not by a longshot, the same way I oppose all radical ideologies, but I do understand how it developed.

If a war comes, a war comes, but the Islamists only share half the blame...

If? Where have you been for the last 20 years?

What's odd though is that I haven't seen any AQ news releases saying that they've gone to war with us because of 200 years of oppression. They talk about the here and now - infidels in the holy land, filthy purveyors of atheism, defenders of wicked Zionism, a holy mandate to put all of the world under their God. At least they have the self-respect not to fall back on some shopworn boilerplate straight out of a community college poli-sci class.

It's a cube that while construction was black, if you think that's offensive that a "general" item that during construction (and not after) was the same color as a "mecca" and the same shape, "cube" (as is millions of other things) then I just give up.

I think some people might find it offensive. When someone posts a news with "Mulsims find X offensive", instead of juming on the "those retards need to be evaporated, lets piss"em off more " bandwagon, i'm trying to understand why someone found X offensive.

Damn, some ignorant muslim posted in a blog how this was offensive and all of a sudden it's as if the entire Muslim world stood up and thought the exact same thing.

And this coming from MEMRI too who have apperantly refused to provide which website claimed this.

Richard Wachtel, who answered the phone at MEMRI's Washington offices, said in an e-mail Wednesday that the material was translated directly from the source and that MEMRI's mission is "to present material that would otherwise go unreported, including discussions on Islamist Web sites -- as it is written and read in the Arab world."

Wachtel requested that questions be put in an e-mail but did not respond to questions about the source of the "Apple Mecca" posting or MEMRI's position on the issue.

However, Ibrahim Hooper, of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, once told the Washington Times that the organization's goal is to find the "worst possible quotes from the Muslim world and disseminate them as widely as possible."

You missed out the "brainwashed" side of things! Seriously, though -- look around the world and you will see that "Muslim" figures in just about every major conflict. Gaza/Lebanon. Kashmir. Kosova/Bosnia. Nigeria. Sudan. Indonisia. The Caucuses etc. In the small city in which I live there have been numerous, though fairly minor "street battles". All have involved Muslims -- against Afro-Carribeans, Sikhs, and "whites". They seem to find everyone and everything offensive, and it is no longer a joke. These people are dangerous fanatics who have no regard for life (not even their own), and one day we are going to have to deal with them seriously or lose our way of life. You cannot negotiate with fanatical lunatics.

Its not a thread to "further bash muslims". Its a thread trying to figure out why some people get so offended so easily over trivial ****. When Apple was constructing it, if they had people outside mock worshipping it, or something along those lines, then maybe i could see someone getting a little mad, but come on, seriously.
