Jaubert and de Montfort are different "commando" regiments? Can you provide some background about how they fit in the French OOB/ORBAT? Presumably they are under the Navy... are they like 40/42/45 Commando of the 3rd BDE Royal Marines?

Righto, here goes:
The French Navy special forces component is made up of five "Commandos", a Commando being a company-sized unit in this case. The five Commandos are (with their specialisation):
Commando Hubert - combat swimmer/MCT/SDV
Commando de Montfort - NGSFO and CAS ops/heavy wepons
Commando Jaubert - VBSS/NEO and MCT with the ECMC (now apparently called ECTLO) as part of the unit
Commando Trepel - VBSS and NEO
Commando de Penfentenyo - beach recce/recce in general
That's basically it. There are from 82 to 102 members in each Commando. And there's a "Cellule Tactique Projetable" (Forward Tactical HQ) which acts as the link between the Commandos and COS during operations.

approx yeap...they have common history and trad .(green beret for exemple the first french naval codo was created in Uk during the wwII)
but AFAIK may be french teams are more focus on special ops like the SBS.
The French Naval Commandos units are under command of the Force Maritime des Fusiliers Marins et Commandos (FORFUSCO) in Lorient. It is headed by an officer with the title of Commandement des Fusiliers Marins et Commandos (COFUSCO).
The naval SF units are the Marine Commandos ( Commandos de Marine). These are
divided into five units (fr: commandos. The term commando can mean both unit and soldier):
Hubert, Jaubert, Trepel, De Penfentenyo and De Montfort. The total number of all these
commandos (soldier) is approx. 500 members. Each commando (unit) is composed of about 80 men,divided into four sections with 20 elements each.
• Jaubert: Assault at sea, exfiltration, fight in enclosed spaces at sea.
• Trepel: Assault at sea, exfiltration.
• de Penfentenyo: Reconnaissance, intelligence operations.
• de Montfort: Distance neutralisation, special back-ups.
• Hubert: Submarine action, combat divers.
+ the GCMC: Groupe de Combat en Milieu Clos ("Combat Group in Closed Areas"), naval counter-terrorism. created in 1994.
This group, like the B-section of the Commando Hubert is trained for naval assault missions; for example the releasing of vessels taken in control by terrorists.
All of these commandos, except for Hubert, are located in Lorient. Commando Hubert is situated in Saint Mandrier.
Add around 1000 fusiliers marins ("naval rifleman") in charge of the security of french vessels and navals bases.

Great stuff, thanks for the informative replies! Can you help me out with some of the acronyms:
VBSS; ECTLO/ECMC; MCT/SDV; NGSFO and CAS ops (Close Air Support? like Forward Observers for air?)?
NEO I assume is Noncombatant Evacuation Ops...

Sorry for the acronyms.
VBSS = Vessel Boarding, Search and Seizure (it's a US term)
ECTLO = Escouade de Contre Terrorisme et de Libération d'Otages (Counter-terrorist and Hostage Rescue Team)
ECMC = Escouade de Combat en Milieu Clos (Close Quarter Combat Team)
MCT = Maritime Counter-Terrorism
SDV = Swimmer Delivery Vehicle
NGSFO = Naval Gunfire Support Forward Observer
CAS = Close Air Support
NEO = Noncombatant Evacuation Operations

Thx. I couldn't remember the VBSS one, but knew what it meant. I recognize SDV now... knew CAS and NEO, but the others are new to me. Thanks for spelling out! :cantbeli:

Ah, there you touch upon a cultural difference between French and US forces. You'd have to ask our French forum members, but I think the closest would be "Vive la Royale". Commandos Marine, however, are not usually known for their vocal regimental slogans. In one documentary where they show a group of freshly-badged (or 'bereted') Commandos-Marine, there was a bagpipe player, and that was that.

hey Ralf, do you have any video of dinops? Sadly you her so little of them :(No, I don't have any videos of the DINOPS. The videos of the Commando Jaubert and Commando de Montfort are available in higher resolution - but for YouTube I have to reduce the size. Only videos with max. 100 MB are allowed. The original videos on my PC have 101 and 176 MB.

Great videos. Thanks for them. I specially liked the GCP video.
I was recently on a shooting course where a guy from Commandos Marine (Commando Trepel) was participating too. Very impressive guy. Cold and calm, but had this deadly aura around him. Funny thing was, he knew one of the guys from my company who was i Trepel too. The world is a village :-)
