I dont see why people tape a second mag to another.... if he has to hit the deck into dirt/mud/water, etc. that's going straight into the mag... wouldnt it cause a bit too many jams? First thing I wouldnt want in a firefight is a jammed gun  But I guess they are urban but still :bash:

That doesnt mean you have to point the open side down.

You're right man. Up and only up.

But man (looking nerviously around in search of Permskii) those are from interrior troops. The're not very strong in military things since their main objective - police missions.

their helmets look like fungus

Maybe but they function quite well (and can be stripped down to just the plates), if your interested in learning about them im pretty sure Permiski posted some info on them awhile back ago. You can get different color "covers" for them but OD is usually what comes with it.

Not sure of the unit though, it might be a police unit.

Kamysh rules, no doubt about it. woot

Oh - btw. Do you guys happen to know why this specific headgear is called balaclava? Something to do with the Crimean War famous battle? Light Brigade failed charge? You know the context? I never really asked myself...

I don't know. I only know our US pals call it so. Actually we here call it "bandana"

So what kind is used by spetznaz?

Kolpak-3; Kolpak-3M, Udar, and sometimes the good old steel helmet. :)
Again I'm talking about SpN GRU. Plus it depends on the area of operations.

Interior troops use "Sfera" mostly.
We haven't used them.

I don't know if there are websites containing the pictures. But Kolpak is made by NPO "Spetsmaterialov". The same company makes the Modul-3M armored vests, which we use.
I'll try to find it.

BTW how come most Russian military photos I see, people use blue tape to tape their mags together. Is there a particular brand of tape the military uses?

The russian Mafia have a stranglehold on the "tape used to tape two magazines together" raquet, and they only supply blue so they know it came from them rofl rofl rofl

All the black tape went to tape hockey sticks for hockey teams, so the military uses blue ones. :D

Me...want...SVD...*drool* p-)

Oh, and about helmets... Every now and then I hear people speaking about how (insert your choice here) helmet is able to withstand a (insert your choice here) bullet. Now, what I find funny about this is, unless you defy physics, even if the helmet can take it, I doubt your head can... I mean, just imagine an 8-11g bullet hitting something at 400-800m/s... (this is, in theory, of course)

You can simulate this! Put on a helmet and ask your buddy to hit you with a sledgehammer
:D

This man has an excellent point. Someone I know who shoots in competitions competetively in the UK with shotguns 'tested' the British Mk6 helmet. He tested it with buckshot, the helmet withstood most of it, but there is little doubt that your neck would snap if the helmet caught that while on your head.

...And couple of years ago, there was a article in a gun magazine about weapons of Russian Kretchet. There was a one picture of a guy handling a anti-tank mine TM-62 and that guy was wearing bomb disposal suit.

Of course text under that pic said something like this:
"Newest russian bomb disposal suit can take the detonation of anti-tank mine."

...heh heh...but they didn't mention, what happends to poor guy in it...

Just a guess, but I think this is exactly the reason you don't see too many Russians wear helmets in combat, what's the point - even if the bullet doesn't penetrate, it still will snap the neck.

Any comments from those with combat experience?

Most helmets are worn to deflect shrapnel, not bullets.

Because of the shrapnel, rocks, dirt and other stuff flying around in the battlefield?

And I'm thinking it must be pretty rare when a bullet flies straight towards your head? Usually helmet's are pretty round in shape so it sure repels/directs the bullet better than the human skull, yes?

When the international live-round exercises start, I'll be wearing one ;)

The german helmets from ww1, you know the ones with the bolts attached to the front, were made so you could fix a steel plate there as protection against snipers trying to scalp you. They quickly realised that those steel plates would be put to better use elsewhere since the force of the bullet killed/maimed the hit guys instead.

Even if the bullet doesnt penetrate the helmet, you will most likely be pushing up the daisies a few minutes later due to either a snapped neck or massive intracerebral haemorrage.
