Apple's "Mecca Project" Provokes Muslim Reaction
On October 10, 2006, an Islamic website posted a message alerting Muslims to what it claims is a new insult to Islam. According to the message, the cube-shaped building which is being constructed in New York City, on Fifth Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets in midtown Manhattan, is clearly meant to provoke Muslims. The fact that the building resembles the Ka'ba (see picture below), is called "Apple Mecca," is intended to be open 24 hours a day like the Ka'ba, and moreover, contains bars selling alcoholic beverages, constitutes a blatant insult to Islam. The message urges Muslims to spread this alert, in hope that "Muslims will be able to stop the project."

Jay for the G4 Cube!
A black rectangular cube is such a basic shape that they really cant complain about that. Also I find it interesting that the Ka'ba seems to be the only other building in the world that is open 24 hours a day.
The real question is: When will they get offended by Kaba cocoa?

Inside the Kaaba, there is a marble floor. The interior walls are clad with marble half-way to the roof; tablets with Qur'anic inscriptions are inset in the marble. The top part of the walls is covered with a green cloth decorated with gold embroidered Qur'anic verses. The building is believed to be otherwise empty. Caretakers perfume the marble cladding with scented oil, the same oil used to anoint the Black Stone outside.

Not inside, but on an edge there is a black stone, said to be bringed from the heaven by Allah or one of his angels.

Muslims say that the Stone was found by Abraham (Ibrahim) and his son Ishmael (Ismail) when they were searching for stones with which to build the Kaaba. They recognized its worth and made it one of the building's cornerstones.
Secular historians point to the history of meteorite worship, in pre-Islamic Arabia, and say that it is likely that the Stone is a meteorite or possibly impact glass, from the meteorite impact crater at Wabar, about 1100 km from Mecca. There is no way to test this hypothesis without removing and examining the Stone, which would not be permitted by its guardians.

My understanding is that, in the early years of the Prophet Muhammed, the Ka'aba was used as repository for stone statues. One statue to be worshipped by each Arabian tribe.
This is one reason why Islam is so down on graven images of animals and people, especially when it comes to worship.

It's a two way street mate.
Problem is, extremists in the Muslim religion have forgotten this and are trying to blow us up with homemade bombs. Weapon companies have nothing to do with that.
It's a building with a very simple design. If people wanted to really offend Muslims, they could find much better ways to go about...it's just so EASY to accomplish these days as EVERYTHING seems to piss them off.
Im against all religions and I make fun of them on a regular basis... BUT, if I was a religous person, followed an organized religion, I guess I would be pissed of too, if I saw they use important buildings (even more if they are the most sacred building of my confession) to sale and make money.
While in spain the expression "Mecca of surf, dance music, oldsmobiles, whatever" is a much used one, I consider it a bit tasteless to use go so far and copy a building for bussines reasons.

Moving back to the OP, this particular bit of outrage seems to have fizzled. The Apple store is a glass cube, not a black stone one.
As for the Ka'aba, it is not at all unusual to go inside. Some days the Ka'aba people are doing maintenance or whatever and a line forms. The neat thing is that when inside the cube, you may pray in any direction, so people come in, do a couple of rahkhas in each of four directs, look around and leave.
The rock is a rock. Nothing too special about it. In the same way the Ka'aba is a building. It has been repaired and rebuilt from time to time. The covering is replaced once a year (and shady merchants begin selling bits of the old cloth), the inside stuff is replaced less often.
The King, along with diplomats from around the world go in once a year to clean the floor with zam-zam water. It is quite an honor to go in with the King.
As for the moon-god thing, LazyLob is probably about to point out that the name of God in Arabic is supposedly derived from the name of an ancient pagan god. Therefore you see, Muslims are not worshiping the True God because they are using the wrong name.
Oh, yeah. That makes a lot of sense. Better to pray in English. It was good enough for Jesus (PBUH) after all.

That is SO lame, bit tasteless, people in spain don't seem to have the same sensitivity about jews or other minorities, so why using the word mecca should be insensitive?
I knew Spain became a Dhimmi state since the attacks, but I couldn't believe it would reach such a level.
Are you spaniard?
On a general basis, aren't you european tired of apologizing for things you did not commit, or commited so long ago that nobody cares? Supposedly to give justice to your victimes, while you use this to evade your international responsibility.
Aren't you tired of giving in on front of muslim threats under the false claim it is more sensitive, while in fact you are just scared ****less?
How come it is possible to hang around in Paris, London or Madrid with a shirt of the Hizballah, and would be suicidal to do it with a shirt showing the stars and stripes or the star of David?
Europe as it shows today is a whore nobody respects, and not the extremists muslims in the first place, they use your welfare, your pseudo contrition about colonialism, made your freedom of speech their tool to proclaim their supposed superiority, and death to whoever says does, even thinks else.
This goes for all the western european countries that becames dhimmi states, that are ready to sell their momy to a little bit more quiet.

Off to an AWESOME start!! Wasn't talking about you, I was talking about ***the small minority*** of Muslims who were oh-so-offended about this.
Either way, I'll back you up if you want. p-)

tell them to get a life. I'm sick of these idiots trying to change how we live our lives. they're just hijacking their own religion..

Look, there is no truth in the OP (in any meaningful way). The article cited by the OP is simply a provocation designed to evoke the sort of reaction you are having. You are being played, and the odds are not my the Muslims.

I just want to say this thread is bull*** i have never ever hear anything about this apple store even the most radical moslems willnot be offended about this..why?
1-shape is different some ppl build their houses like mosques.
2-name Mecca is the city ,"ka'aba is the name of the place as moslems said house of god" I thought if it has the same name some ppl will be offended in general who believes in god.
3-not only moslem who belive in something and asked other to respect thier religion but also JEWS,CHRAISTIANS,HUNDUS..and.BUDDA.
