Recently got out of California and am busy wasting money on toys. Already have a WASR10/AKMS clone, and an M1A. Now it is time for an AR. I have settled on a bushmaster M4gery with the 14.5 inch barrel and the izzy break. Now all I need to decide is on the receiver type. This weapon is for fun and not for driving off waves of zombies. So should I go with the A1 style or the A3 style with an acog?

A3 ACOG or bust!

Ok, I'd let it go with an Eotech or Aimpoint.

A3 for the modularity.

Better to have and donīt need then not to have and need.

Like the two guys above, you can't go wrong if you go A3.

You can maintain a proper cheek weld when looking through optics.

A3, if you want to keep it standard, you can always put the carrying handle back on.

If you want toys go to Walmart, if you want a Carbine or rifle for a man go to your local gun shop.

M4's are still a nice choice and the price point on the market is still good, but you might also consider some of your alternative choices that your lucky enough to have today also.
You have the choice to also have if you want,

POF's 415's,

As for an M4/Car I'd say Rock Rivers mid length A4 with the gas block option and chromelined 1 an 9.
That way be able to use whatever buis's you like best and customize with stock, grip and forearm choices from there.

How old are you? Do you have a family?

Save the money and invest it.

Firearms are an investment for someone's family.
Most hold there value very well and have the priceless value of protection that they may give ones family someday.
Plus if the lunatic Democrat's do win this next election and hold majority seats and continue to push for another assualts weapons ban, blaming object's instead of the people doing the crimes, than this rifle he chooses to buy could be worth alot more money and value if that were to happen.

Just the same I don't think he was interested in your personal outlook, but in which direction may be best in firearms choice for his.

Read his post again...

He already owns two semiautomatic firearms, and he asked the entire forum for input on how he should spend his money, so I would say he was interested in what I have to say. If he wasn't, he shouldn't have posed the question.

True investing it probably is the best advice. But.....

With respect, your advice is valid and investing is always good, but all I read him asking about was,

Help me pick out my new toy...

Eleven Alpha, if your going in the Army now would be a good time to buy some new weapons without the hassle of needing your commanders approval later. Not that it should be an extreme hassle, but that depends on your commander too.

Some more POF teasers for you,

A true assault rifle is: A rifle chambered for a mid range(usually sub 30 cal) catridge with an overall length of less than 40 inches, or a shorter/carbine version of a similar model. With the capability of SELECT FIRE.

The last part is the key, select fire is not "safe" and "fire". Select fire incorporates some type of burst or full auto function. 99% of all AR's(all firearms for that matter) sold in the US are not select fire, therefore they are NOT assault rifles. The term Assault rifle is used by the media as a "buzz word" that gets the less educated all fired up about some firearm related story. Everytime there's a shooting it involves one of 3 types of firearms. An "assault rifle" a "semi automatic pistol" or the proverbial "sawed off shotgun". All buzz words used to sell more copies of the paper or increase viewership. Unfortunately the masses are more than willing to swallow what ever crap is put in front of them by professional reporters and editors. Neither of which are SME on firearms, vehicles, children, crime, fire fighting, aviation, law, etc etc. The media acquires some basic facts spins some hype on top to sensationalize the otherwise flat story and proceeds to milk it for all the revenue generating viewership it can. CNN is very good at taking a garbage story and milking it for atleast 3 days. I don't mean any disrespect to those of 9/11 but I'm sure someone at CNN must have thought they hit the jackpot. 3 plus months of non stop coverage. If that isn't making profit off someone's misfortune....

Just wanted to add:Sturmgewehr is the original Assault Rifle, the buzz word used by the Antis is ASSault Weapon which they use to describe anything that looks scary.

So a full on battle rifle is now an assault rifle? I guess this other member must know something you and I(as well as others here) don't.

I hate to sound picky, but if members here wish to discuss firearms and be taken seriously. It is best that they become versed in proper terms and basic nomenclature. Nothing kills your credibility like referring to magazines as clips, or using the term assault rifle where it doesn't belong. Oh wait, my favorites are, fully automatic assault rifle with a banana clip and "kick".

Here in CA, a bolt action, single shot, .50 BMG (12.7x99mm) rifle is an assault weapon by law. Retardation at it's best!

I'd buy a new fart bag from Wiggy's or someone. :)

Exactly..Weapons are not toys..If you think they are then on your next visit to the range let your buddy pop a few lives rounds off you to set you strait as to WTF you think your talking about so you can tell the dif between a toy and a weapon before you hurt someone..

if your buying a military style semi automatic rifle its basically for fun, your not going to be defeating al qaidia with it or hunting with it .
theres lots of dangerous "toys" out there my powerkite can seriously hurt someone if I'm an idiot, kelvar line moving at over 60 mph is going to hurt. Just because somebody refers to his new rifle as a Toy does'nt make him a dangerous idiot.
technically there may be a diffrence between a battle rifle or an assualt rilfe but outside of gun users nobody else cares Black plastic rifle assualt rifle and scary:)
wooden rifle old fashioned and nice (not sure if anyone could or would build a wooden furniture m4 type carbine )
the media don't know or care
I still really really hate you :)

Just because he refer to it as a new toy, doesn't mean he doesn't respect the weapon and it's seriousness.
After all safety concerns and cautions are addressed, shooting is an extremely fun sport with many different aspects that make it more challenging and more fun.

Unpucker a bit fella's.

I have no tolerance for unsafe handling of firearms and support everyone's right to bear arms, but there is no doubt some people are just too unconcerned and stupid to do it safely for the rest of us.
That doesn't mean that Eleven Alpha is one of them because he wants a fun gun to just use to enjoy shooting.

Jeez, some people need to get their panties out of a twist.

I don't know if you've heard of this one thing going around, but it's great. It's a little something called SARCASM, and if you finally figure out what it is you'll add a few years to your life.

In other words, CHILL THE F*CK OUT.

Got to spend some time at the range yesterday, and try out several different configurations. Still need to try out one of those piston rifles, before I buy. However the highlight of the day was a friends brand new FS2000, which after the plasticy newness wore off, turned out to be a big dissapointment. The rifle is compact, and does point fairly well, but it is not a thousand dollars more compact than the ar15 platform. Mag changes are different, but not hard. The trigger does not feel as heavy as all the online reviews make it out to be. Accuracy wasnt bad, but wasnt $2k+ great... About on par with a 16inch generic m4gery (able to put a whole magazine into a rough 4 inch group at 100 yards). If it was cheaper, maybe $1200, I would consider getting one, if only to be like look at my HALO assault rifle!!!! I mean... errrrrr... semiautomatic sporting carbine!!!!

One weird thing worth mention was point of aim didnt change from him to me. It usualy does.
