Mortar Attack in Central Baghdad, No Casualties
BAGHDAD (*******) - A mortar round landed close to Baghdad's Sheraton Hotel on Friday, causing a thunderous explosion that echoed across the city center, but there were no casualties, a ******* correspondent at the scene said.
The mortar landed in the grounds of a house near the hotel, sending up a large plume of smoke.
U.S. forces had been on high alert for major guerrilla attacks in Baghdad on Friday to coincide with the first anniversary of the ousting of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites).
Many foreign contractors, businesspeople, diplomats and journalists are based in the Sheraton and the nearby Palestine Hotel.
