BOSTON (AP) - Former Rep. Gerry Studds, who became the first openly gay member of Congress when his homo******ity was exposed during a teenage page *** scandal, died early Saturday. He was 69.
Studds died at Boston Medical Center several days after he collapsed while walking his dog, his husband said. Doctors determined his loss of consciousness was due to a blood clot in his lung, Dean Hara said.
Studds regained consciousness and seemed to be improving, but his condition deteriorated Friday because of a second blood clot. The origin of the second clot was not immediately determined, said Hara, who married Studds shortly after same-*** marriage was legalized in Massachusetts in 2004.
Hara said Studds gave courage to gay people by winning re-election after publicly acknowledging his homo******ity.

Studds was first elected in 1972 and represented Cape Cod and the Islands, New Bedford, and the South Shore for 12 Congressional terms. He retired from Congress in 1997.
In his early career, Studds was known for opposing the Vietnam War and military intervention in Central America. Studds later became an advocate for a stronger federal response to the AIDS crisis and was among the first members of Congress to endorse lifting the ban on gays serving in the military.
In 1983, Studds acknowledged his homo******ity after a 27-year-old man disclosed that he and Studds had had a ****** relationship a decade earlier when the man was a teenage congressional page.
The House of Representatives censured Studds, who then went home to face his constituents in a series of public meetings.

But he did not apologize and defended the relationship as a consensual relationship with a young adult. The former page later appeared publicly with Studds in support of him.
The scandal recently resurfaced when Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., resigned after exchanging ******ly explicit instant messages with a page. Republicans accused Democrats of hypocrisy for savaging Foley while saying little about Studds at that time.
Hara said Studds was never ashamed of the relationship with the page.
"This young man knew what he was doing," Hara said. "He was at (Studds') side."
Studds told his colleagues in a speech on the floor of the House that everyone faces a daily challenge of balancing public and private lives.
"These challenges are made substantially more complex when one is, as am I, both an elected public official and gay," Studds said at the time.
In Congress, Studds was an outspoken advocate for the fishing industry and was hailed by his constituents for his work establishing a limit for foreign fishing vessels 200 miles from the coast. After leaving Congress, he became a lobbyist for the fishing industry and environmental causes.
"His work on behalf of our fishing industry and the protection of our waters has guided the fishing industry into the future and ensured that generations to come will have the opportunity to love and learn from the sea," Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said in a statement. "He was a steward of the oceans."
In 1996, Congress named the 842-square-mile Gerry E. Studds Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary after him in recognition of his work protecting the marine environment.
In addition to Hara, Studds is survived by a brother, a sister and four nephews.

2 questions:
1.The guy has just died so you create a thread about him with a "funny" title why?
2.Why have you highlighted the parts of the article that refere to his ******ity?

Not trying to start anything, I just seems remarkably disrespectful to me.

The irony here in the states is that the Democrats are calling for Rep. Foley to be crucified along with anyone who supposedly knew about his e-mailing underage Congressional pages. Meanwhile, over the years there have been several Democrat politicians who have had *** with underage pages and have not been raked over the coals nearly as bad as Foley who did NOT have ****** relations.

When his piggy communications were made public, he resigned.

When Stubbs, Barney Frank, etc. were "outed" in the public arena, they were praised for being brave to proclaim their gayness. Anyone who called for censure or removal from office on the political right was immedietly branded a homophobe.

Democrat: "How DARE you call for his removal! You gay-basher!"

Republican: "Uh, I'm not gay-bashing, I'm just wondering if anyone remembers that there's some of the those "law" things about having *** with underage children."

Democrat: "Its o.k.! The boys said they didn't mind and because of his relations with these pages he has now come to terms with his gayness. Isn't that special?"

Republican: "Oh, o.k. Sure. That makes it all better somehow???"

Democrat: "You FASCIST, HOMOPHOBIC, RIGHT WING CONSPIRATOR!!!"

I'm glad he's dead. Somebody like that shouldn't be in such a position of leadership.

He was censured and the PEOPLE re-elected him. Who's to blame for what? Sounds like he was punished and HIS voters didn't care.

The article/thread wasn't so much about Studds as it was about Foley and the Democrats hyprocisy. (Yes I know it exists on both sides)

There isn't much to hypocrisy here, IMO. He was punished by his colleagues (censured), then the people had the chance to have their say... just like they will this time. If the people "say" different... it isn't hypocrisy... it's life.

The voters are to blame. He was a fitting representative of the democrat voters of Massachusetts i.e. morons.

It's not about the voters electing(or not electing) someone to congress. It's about the Democrats turnig a blind eye to their own(a censure is essentially meaningless) and bashing a Republican for doing something similiar. Also the news media didn't pound Studds the way they did Foley. No pun intended.

Censured but Reelected
Former Republican Congressman Mark Foley resigned in disgrace after revelations of his lewd computer messages to a former house page became public — and has been universally disavowed by the GOP. But a Democratic congressman who actually had a homo****** affair with an underage House page and remained an honored figure within the party right up until his death Saturday is being praised as a "pioneer" for gay rights. Former Massachusetts Congressman Gerry Studds was censured for his actions by the House in 1983 — but he never apologized — in fact defended the relationship — and was re-elected six times. Congressman Ted Kennedy said Studds “changed Massachusetts forever and we'll never forget him." And Congressman Willian Delahunt said "even now, his legacy is alive and well in the halls of Congress."

Hypocrasy at it's finest.

No, what I'm saying is that his colleagues punished him and his voters decided it wasn't enough to throw him out. I certainly wouldn't have voted for him, I just see no hypocrisy. I suppose Foley could've taken his chances with censure and re-election... obviously he thought otherwise.
As for Hasert... if there was a coverup, there was a coverup. I don't care if it was Dem or Republican. If they hid it in order to continue the illusion of the GOP's crap not stinkin', there's an ethics issue.

That's a lie. According to information I have, he died from severe hemorrhage from anus.
