Becoz they are just magazines that hold well more ammo. Holding more ammo also makes your assault rifle equivalent to a GPMG.
Just like the previous '90 Rounder' but more compact holding 10 rounds extra.

in one respect, isn't it easier to shoot from ****e (liek the c-mag being smaller can allow gun/shooter to aim gun lower)

Not really at all, most GPMG's have heavier barrels and are designed for heavy sustained fire, unlike an assault rifle. I think the main reason military doesn't use them is because of reliablility, but thats just a guess.

That (those who remember the days of the SLR know that it came in a heavier barrel, full auto squad support varient) and the whole cost issue. Last time I looked, those C-mags were well over $100US (retail). How many normal 20-30rd mags could you get for that?

As far as I know, C-Mags never been adopted by any military unit.
They have been tested by quiet a few SF's units, and once in awhile you'll see one in the field.
Range performance is normally pretty good. YouŽll see lots of 100rds "dumps" without a single mal.
But once in the "real world" they tend to malfunction. Why? You need to clean them very often and they are ****e to get damage if abused by the handler.

AFAIK the use of beta-c mags is forbidden in the US Army due to malfunctions.
Germany and as Wamba said spain use some of them though. General acceptance here in Germany is good, although they are overall a rather rare sight.
I shot one once but it was only about half full and placed on a bipod. So I can't really say much about it.

Even if the mag is reliable the weapon might not be due to long sustained fire.

The size of the Beta C mag isn't very practical either. It's difficult to hold and fire a G3 with a Beta C because the magazine gets in the way of your arm placement.

They are a bit of a problem on bullpup style weapons too, because it gets in the way of master hand and the pistol grip.
An Irish guy showed me one in timor in 99, it was a pretty big bit of kit.
In my opinion I prefer standard mags and the flexibilty they offer, once your done with the c mag in a contact or drill you got to put it somewhere, especially if you purchased it yourself. At least with a 30rd mag once its empty, I'll only try once or twice to put it away (down shirt or dump pouch) during a drill or contact if its not away in the first couple attempts its getting biffed. Between the amount of mags in my rig and grab bag I can afford to loose a few. Got a ****e load of spares sitting around the garage and if not I'll just nick a few extra from the Q store to replace any lost.

The C-mag is used in the danish forces with along with the Diemaco LSW. Both the weapon itself and the C-mag is much debated though, and many troops choose to simple bring more standard mags, possible clinged together, instead of the C-mag.
But well, we've also got the crappoass Thermold-mags as standard issue, guess that gives away some of the truth..

some us army units were testing beta c mags in Astan but they werent happy w/ them.
lately Colt designed a "new" carbine for the IAR project (USMC). it should use beta mags.

On the range they perform not that bad, but then i must say: Never had a gunfight on a range :-)
They tend to have malfunctions. I had a few on the range with a brandnew C-Mag. Also it makes the gun too heavy and bulky. It's nice to have 100 rounds, but better aim and target practicing, accorded with fast mag changes is better than this 100rd monster.
It never replaces a LMG or GPMG. Never. No barrel change, too much malfunctions. When I need a LMG or a GPMG I take one, and don't pretend a M16 to be one.
