I think I was in Central America around that time.
And I think that Iranian bit is some attempt at being anti-war. I'm pretty damn sure our relations with Russia are better now, and we'd give them a warning before we did anything.

This was not first such case...
Lt. Col Stanislav Petrov, Americans should know this guy's name because he singlehandedly prevented an all out strike on the USA and WW3.
Russian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia) Strategic Rocket Forces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_Rocket_Forces) lieutenant colonel who, on September 26 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_26), 1983 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983), averted a potential nuclear war by refusing to believe that the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) had launched missiles against the Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union), despite the indications given by his computerized early warning systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warning_system).
and all that happend at a time of a severe drop in relations between the US and USSR, just a week or so after the Korean Airlines plane was shot down and Soviet intelligence gave out information to prepare for a possible nuclear strike on the USSR.

Kay: There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Corillian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable little planet, and the only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they Do... Not... Know about it!

no misisle defense system can help if its an all out strike. Just the submarine based missiles have 10 warheads each and each submarine carries about 20, so one submarine 200 nuclear warheads, each independently targetable....
