“Born 20 July 1873 in state of Minas Gerais, Alberto Santos Dumont moved to Paris in 1891 but never forgot his birthplace. He soon began experimenting with flying, and designed his first balloon, the Brasil, in 1898. He later built and flew 11 dirigibles, including the prize-winning Number 6. He flew his first airplane, the 14-bis, on October 1906, the first aircraft to take off and land without any external assistance. His many other contributions to aviation included his 1907 Demoiselle, the precursor to modern light airplanes. He returned definitely to Brazil in 1931 and died in 1932”.

He finally achieved his dream of flying on an airplane in October 23 of 1906, when, piloting the 14 Bis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/14_Bis) before a large crowd of witnesses, he flew a distance of 60 metres (197 ft) at a height of 2-3 m. This well-documented event was the first flight verified by the Aero-Club De France (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Aero-Club_De_France&action=edit) of a powered heavier-than-air machine in Europe, and the first public demonstration in the world of an aircraft taking off from an ordinary airstrip (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airstrip) with a non-detachable landing gear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landing_gear) and on its own power (self-propelled) in calm weather, proving to the spectators that a machine "heavier than air" could take off from the ground by its own means. With this accomplishment, he won the Archdeacon Prize (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Archdeacon_Prize&action=edit) founded by the Frenchman Ernest Archdeacon (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ernest_Archdeacon&action=edit) in July of 1906, to be awarded to the first aviator to fly more than 25 meters. On November 12 of the same year, Santos-Dumont succeeded in setting the first world record in aviation by flying 220 meters in less than 22 seconds. WIKIPEDIA
