U.S. Army Says Kills 15 Insurgents in North Iraq

MOSUL, Iraq (*******) - The U.S. army said on Saturday it killed 12 insurgents in northern Iraq (news - web sites), destroying their truck with a missile after the guerrillas opened fire.

"A patrol from 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment was engaged by 12 assailants in a truck with a rocket-propelled grenade near Al Thubat," a U.S. statement said. "The patrol returned fire with a missile, destroying the truck and killing all 12 assailants."


U.S. forces also killed three people it said were insurgents after clashes broke out at a demonstration in front of Mosul city hall on Friday, the statement said.


A dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed in the city of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, after the clashes.


Most of the recent fighting in Iraq has been between foreign troops and either Shi'ite militants in southern and central Iraq or Sunni insurgents in Baghdad and the west.


But there have been demonstrations in support of those fighting the occupation in many towns to the north, several of which have turned violent. Hospital officials say some of those killed were civilians.

If I were an expert on this, I wouldnt be wasting my time here on the forums with you guys. The U.S. had a simple way to counter such insurgents during WW2. They firebombed the cities to break the will of any resistance. Unfortunate but strength is the only thing Arabs understand, so this may work. Seeing that the U.S. isnt as "evil" as they used to be, this is unlikely to happen. This insurgency is more of a political crisis, not a military crisis.

Not to be insensitive to the deaths of fellow americans and coalition warriors, the casualty rate in minuscule compared to any other war in our history, excluding Desert Storm, and is even exceeded by the occasional "police action".

Ever since Israel went in more aggressively over two years ago, where before there was almost a homicide bombing attack almost daily or weekly and a shooting attack almost as frequent, now as a result of the IDF actions, it has reduced the number of homicide bombings by over 50 percent and shooting attacks on a ever higher percentage to where even after we killed the Hamas leader, and they promised immediate revenge, they were NOT able to do so when they said they would.

Now of course this isn’t no solution (nor am I optimistic that anything Israel will do or not, can bring any solution) and I as well think there will be more homicide bombings, but what is clear is that we have indeed dramatically reduced the number of attacks and that IMO is very successful in the absence of any peaceful partner on the other side no matter what Israel does or doesn’t do.

So indeed you cant stop it but you can marginalize it.

I mean political solutions are great when there can be a political solution, and in fact it has been tried over and over again and yet there was never a change in the hearts and in the actions against, and as such that is why I say that in the absence of any peace, regardless of what a nation does or doesn’t do, in other words in the absence of a change in heart despite any political moves or not, the best you can do is limit any actions and indeed we have done so big time (and with a few more completed steps we will even limit it even more)!!

(Notice I left out any names of nations or people or organizations, so as to perhaps try to keep this more in a realm of theory as opposed to actual events, for although I certainly paralleled actual events, I didn’t go in detail and I chose so as to now get into a whole long debate about it AGAIN and AGAIN..etc…..)
