Well, M109 is able to fire directly(....and devastating....) and every kind of armor is better than none.....

It would be quite usefull in street fighting if used properly and supported by infantrie.
As Helex stated direct fire would be devistating.

And if the situation goes to open war, indirect fire is also needed.

Makes sense, 155mm is very powerful, could just level buildings that insurgents are firing from. Nothing new though, if you read "Citizen Soldiers" by Stephen Ambrose, there's an instance of a US SP 155mm being used to destroy bunkers on the Siegfried Line in direct fire. To sight it in, the crew just opened the breech and looked down the bore, if the bunker could be seen, it could be hit. They also used them in town fighting, they were extremely effective, one German commander branded the use "inhuman". 155mm rocks hard.
British AS90 howitzers absolutely creamed Iraqi positions around Basra when they fired bomblet rounds at them. 3 round burst of 155 in under 10 seconds can't really be argued with.

There are four families of 155 mm arty: HE, RAP, ICM, and COPPERHEAD.
I would recommend the APICM, M444. The APICM delivers 18 (6 layers of 3 grenades) M39 antipersonnel grenades. Upon impact, the submunitions eject a grenade upward, which detonate 4 to 6 feet above the ground.
Or... the

But there are other M109 Anti-Personel Techniques...
Killer Junior - technique developed out of the need to protect 155mm battery from ground attacks in Vietnam, since Army didn't design a "Beehive" round for the 155mm howitzer. Killer Juniors were perfected by Lt. Colonel Robert Dean the CO of 1/8th Field Artillery, 25th Infantry Division Artillery. The technique called for firing HE Projectiles with Time Fuses set at 2 seconds or greater to burst approximately 30 feet off the ground at ranges of 200 to 1,000 meters. Killer Juniors (and the 8" Killer Senior) proved to be more effective than Beehive for antipersonnel because the enemy could not crawl under the burst as they could the fan of the Beehive pattern.[/img]

We liked the M109s a hell of a lot better than the M198s they replaced them with. The cannon-cockers at least had somewhere to live out of the elements.
Yes, 50 cal or Mk19 on top.
We once blew up some old tanks and junk at Ft. Knox using Killer Junior. Talk about some motivating ****!
The Marine Corps phased out the M109s in the early 90s. :( (we got our M198s in 94). I believe that a few Amy National Guard units still use the M109.(and theres nothing wrong with that!)
Copperhead is the laser guided round. Only got to shoot a few of those as they're so damn expensive(60 grand!).

its big, its armed, its armored. thats more then enough to make it a usefull piece of equipment in iraq, not to mention putting a 98 lb, 155mm shell into a damned building. even without using the cannon, its still a large heavily armored vehicle for troops to use for all sorts of things.

Intimidating, yes, plus I'd say that 80% of the world's population would think it's a "tank."

Doesn't using a big caliber gun like that in direct fire make it an assault gun? which I think was a WWII era concept the German Army came up with?
The US was/is experimenting with several armored gun concepts.
I thought I read somewhere in this forum they might be sending M-8 Buford prototypes to Iraq. Maybe restart the program?

i report to ft sill for FAOBC on 16-sept. as far as i know, the M109A6 (paladin) is 2nd only to the abrams in terms of armor in the U.S. arsenal, so RPGs have their work cut out for them with that monster.

I think you're thinking of the Crusader.
I hated to see it go, but I think the reasoning behind cancelling it was sound.
The Crusader was just an evolutionary, not revolutionary, step in artillery.
The program had survived other attempts to have it killed.
The reasoning is, I think, that you can make improvements in the ammunition of older 155mm systems (i.e. add rocket assist to the shell to increase its range) as well as use things like MLRS.
Still, it was pretty cool. I think that it was capable of firing three rounds, one after the other, and by adjusting the angle and powder load could place all rounds on target at the same time.

There is a GPS guided Ammonition for the Pzh 2000 in development, any idea if that increases Range and precision that much to use it in a Horwitzer?
