View Full Version : Hungarian protesters hijack Soviet-era tank
Nebelwerfer.

Hungarian anti-Government protesters have gained control of a Soviet-era T-34 tank in Budapest during street riots that have marred the 50th anniversary of the anti-Soviet uprising.
Protesters managed to start the tank, which had been parked in the capital as part of the anniversary commemorations, and drove it some 100 metres towards a wall of riot police near Deak square in the heart of the city.
Officers fired a volley of tear gas which allowed riot police to charge the vehicle and bring it under control, an AFP photographer on the scene said.
The tank was one of several that had been on display in the capital as a reminder of the ones that were sent by Russia to put down the uprising in 1956.
Police have fired rubber bullets, tear gas and used water cannons at mostly far-right protesters who invaded Budapest's streets.
During the uprising 50 years ago, youngsters used guns and Molotov cocktails in fierce street battles on the streets of Budapest against Soviet tanks sent to put down the protests.
The Hungarian uprising broke out on October 23, 1956 and was brutally crushed by Soviet tanks on November 4, sealing the country's fate as a satellite-state of Moscow until the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989.
The crackdown resulted in the death of 2,800 Hungarians.
A further 12,000 were wounded and 200,000 fled to the West.

I guess driving a tank is not that easy, so my respects for the driver of this tank, as far as I know, no people were killed in Budapest the last days.

I remember watching 'COPS' or some other show like that. Wasn't there a case of tank-jacking in the US when some ex military dude stole a tank and went on a rampage?

Minor correction, he got got stuck on the center divider of the freeway and the cops hopped on top like you said. But when they popped the hatch and ordered him to turn it off and get out, he just tried harder to free the tank and get back to making chaos, so they shot him. He died from his wounds. Then again, i guess after shooting him, they did eventually have to drag him out of the tank, so you are right.

Note when the tank crushes that board, I think board hit that guy in yellow shirt/jacket. And the driver could have easily killed some of the protesters, he's driving through the mass like a frenzy bull p-)
BTW, sorry nick_ua, didn't notice your thread was about the same event ;)

There was an interview with one of the guys who hijacked the tank, unfortunatly I can't find it anywhere. It was pretty funny imo, he seemed to have some mental problems and I guess he was drunk too.

maybe the hijacker had been a conscript and as such he might have learnt to drive a T 34.
