View Full Version : Puukko

I'm looking to buy a puukko. There is one that I'm interested in for sale from a company in Maryland, but I'm not sure if it's wiser to buy one from overseas instead. Cost is a bit of an issue, but I can scrape up the money if I need to.
Anybody have any suggestions?
I think it's best if you contact to different manufacturers and ask from them if they have that kind of puukko you want and how much it would cost. There's one company in Florida, which is importing Finnish puukko to United States.

Is that the one with the wheel retention, given to Finn soldiers?
Sergeant
04-10-2004, 10:34 PM
yes that has wheel retention, at least the one I have. It's a nice one, maybe not the best, but nice one for sure. The wheel retention works properly and you can hook it up to your vest in many ways with its straps and you don't have to worry about it coming off, at least I never noticed any problems even when doing different exercizes..

MaineFinn:
What do you need the puukko for? Is it just for show, for woodworking or for something different?
The one in your picture looks like a nice general-purpose or utility puukko, but for woodworking I would choose a tad shorter one. Better to make wooden whistles with ;).
Now, if I just could persuade Spyderco to make me a light folding knife with a puukko-like general purpose blade...Sissipuukko (literally Ranger Knife) M/95 is nice but too big and heavy for precise work.

I'm looking for something I can carry with me when I'm out in the woods, primarily as a tool. At the moment, I carry my river knife, but I would rather use that solely for paddling. I had an EMS knife, but it disappeared and I haven't been able to locate it. And I had just sharpened it before it vanished. :(

Have to disagree a bit with Uninen. Unless you plan to chop your firewood with your knife, the puukko in your picture would be more useful in all general purpose work. Sissipuukko is very good as a survival and military all purpose tool, but not so useful for everything else.
But that's just my opinion...although I tried Sissipuukko I decided against it and I carry cheap utility puukko's (around $10, from local DIY stores) in the forest. Like I said, they are more useful for woodworking etc ;).

Just for show, of one of my puukko's...a KFOR FINBAT award puukko. Made by Marttiini. More ceremonial or decorative than practical, but at least nice-looking one. And sharp, as always.
I just recently realized that in nearly every picture of Finnish soldiers, there still is at least one leather-sheathed puukko visible. Not for killing or for show (although one former Captain made a point to carry the same puukko which his father carried to Winter War), just because it is so useful after all.

THey should stop talking :)...
Yeah. Let's cut the crap and move on to the booze! After all, it's friday and ya'll know what that means ;)
woot
Who's buying, because I'm not old enough to do it legally yet?
I could. But the fact that we're a couple of thousand miles apart kinda takes the fun out of that :(
But remember, there’s always a way. Ask your parents/older friends to buy. Use someone else’s ID's. If you want it you'll figure a way.
Oh btw, have you already tried Finlandia vodka? You should!
Have a good one :D

Ferment your own alcohol... My firends made it in school locker... ~5 liter bulb of first class red-berry wine under teachers' noses :)

I don't believe that I have, but my mum has a bottle of it in the cabinet. Figures that it appeared there after I moved out. Before that, all they had was Absolut, so I made due with that. But that was a good night!! :D

Maine Finn, you really should stay away from that Swedish absolut crap ;)
Instead, look what mustamato suggests:
2ltr's of kossu for 23$!

Actually, putting a couple of centiliters of Absolut Kurant and the same amount
of Finlandia in a glass, and then some soda and ice. It becomes a good drink.

So a Puuko is booze?
So a Puuko is booze?
I haven't heard of a booze named Puuko, or anything other named Puuko (except as an interrogative in Finnish, translated "The wood?") for that matter, so no. Perhaps you were confusing the word with the subject, puukkos, real Finnish knives, of which real Finnish booze is arguably an inseparable companion. p-)

In Norway, many soldiers use the “same kniv.” I can send you one of those Maine Finn, if you post more of your towel pics :P

You liked those? p-)
Yep we like 'em.
A good jack of all trades knife. You kan use it for every thing from chopping wood, to skinning game, to stirring the chow in the mess tin, to ... chopping heads of (if one's in the mood for it).
Was one local criminal case some years ago when a guy chopped the head of his ex in a combined bout of drunkenness, jealousy and winter depression.
As for liquour must say I prefer this to Vodka though:
http://www.chateaukefraya.com/labels/ARAKDEKEFRAYA.gif
http://www.chateaukefraya.com/videos/ArakAd5.mpg woot :D
At least it taste something.
Though that said it tastes much better bare schnaps style, than mixed with water as the locals tend to do.
Though it's funny seeing the stuff turn milky white when you add water to it.
