Hello new poster (ex-dat) here starting off with a pic that hasn't been posted anywhere.
This was taken in 1983 which makes me probably the first guy to ever do this to an M1. We made a little boo-boo on a night manuever at Ft. Hood. Those of you that know the place will recognize cowhouse creek.
2nd AD commander, MG J. Woodmansee, was in loaders hatch he broke a cpl ribs and got a medvac.
That's me on TC hatch but I was the driver - TC told me to ease it down the hill, I swear! Gun tube over rear because we were last in column at the time.

Ft. Hood eh? Lived there almost half my life. How long where you stationed there? I seriously doubt it but maybe while you were there you may have heard of my old man.
i believe in russia some men where shot durn stalin's time because they got their tank stuck in the mud.
makes you proud to be an american doesnt it.

You can use, no problem.
At night, using the driver's NV periscope, you can only see straight ahead. There's no way a driver can see down unless that's where the tank is going. The TC commands the driver and in this case the TC saw tracks going up the opposite bank and assumed it was just a hill, not a creek.
I think the General was wearing the only pair of cavnavs at that point so he would have been "TC". The TC told me to "ease it down the hill". I was a little surprised when I went vertical but there was no stopping by then.
The entire crew, me included, were injured. I was a good driver - never threw a track. Had to sleep the night in it and people kept coming up and banging on it and yelling "Is everyone all right?", "Thanks but cant ya see were trying to get some shut-eye?" :)

Yes , i am pretty much aware how it's done ;) . Always blame the TC :bash: ;) .

Really ? Damn !! It doesn't look that big of a fall . On what speed you entered inside this slope ?

Always blame the TC
- Just the facts, I was a TC later and if it was my fault I'd say so.

- The end of the gun tube was about even with the top slope so that would make it about 32'. We were at a dead stop at the top and I "eased" it over. What's that sound like? You don't get up to speed in the woods at night.

Yes , now as i look at it , it does seams pretty harsh . I also posted here a picture of 2 accidents from my company , and i myself had one . The only thing that saved our ass in our accident , that the "turn over drill" was done correctly , and the gun stoped from the tank to turn over even more .
Have a question : Is it me , or do i see a boogy wheel infront of loader hatch ?
"Splash out" :)

Where was it at? Out towards Belton Lake or up north of Hood?

I think it was up in the Nothwest corner manuever area. The west side of the range road somewhere.

Yup that's where we used to keep a spare. They were bolted there when we got 'em -that's not a mod. Nice place to store my lunch :) if you look close you'll notice it's got an unmodified (full) rear skirt - dead giveaway for a pre- 1984 Chrysler manufactured M1. BTW - Bogey not boogey :)
he end of the gun tube was about even with the top slope so that would make it about 32'
On second thought this isn't correct. If the tube were over the front it'd be 32' 4". Over the rear - I'd say 26'.

Gottya . Wans't even shure that it was also the term in English . ;) Apparantly the terms are the same . Except one thing . I really don't understand in Inches :P .
Too be correct , the tank in the picture is M1E1 , right ? Was it much different from A1 ?
P.S : So , did you get punished after that ? ;)
Engage right , out .

No. I did have a bunch of Officers from HQ come down to the motorpool and tyr to shake my hand. Guess they didn't like Woodmansee too much but he was Ok with me. I think he was NATO commander later on and he was a hero chopper pilot in 'Nam. Major Generals and Privates always get along fine anyway.

Yes. The major differences between that tank and the A1 is that the E1 had a 105mm L5 gun - the A1 has the 120 smoothbore. The A2 has the upgraded fire control, upgraded NBC survivability, turret rear stowage and the GPS system, as far as I know.

You had a General riding inside the tank ? Nice , nice , not every day one get's an opportunity to brake General bones ;) .
Allright , thanks . Actually , i have another question , about the spare bogey . I noticed on another picture it has other track mechanism bellow the spare bogey , i don't know how it's called in English . Can you tell what that is , please ?
Gunner , sabot , PC, fire fire heat .

Javehn - if you have a pic is there a link? Without seeing it I can only guess that you're describing a spare "track block", a component of the track?

Javehn, Rear Sprocket - I've never seen them break though sometimes the bolts will shear and the entire sprocket wheel will come off. I suppose you could break some teeth on it but I haven't experienced that either.
On the way!
