Official MilitaryPhotos.net Southwestern United States Chapter Shoot, October 26-29th 2006
On thursday, the 26th of October, members StukaJr, LAWorkerBee, and TacoDelRio set off to the sweet free land of Arizona to meet up with Roman of "Russia STRONG!!!111" fame, his friend Eric, and their accomplice, Pat the protocol droid.

On the way, we passed the fire burning near Mt. San Jacinto and Palm Springs. Four fire fighters died to contain the blaze. R.I.P.
We arrived at the Romanski Villa...

Stuka Jr was coming back from outside, and as he was walking by our closet THERE IT WAS -
a CLOSET SNIPER

Only seconds separated Stuka Jr and the SVD barrel of Closet Sniper. Stuka used his Russian skills of "grab the barrel, yank the sniper out"

I don't think there is really easy to store steel targets, they are always so damn heavy.
I suggest you to try balloons and IPSC style (not the diamond shape but proper torso silhoutte) cardboard targets. Do the following: blow balloon size of the head, punch a hole in top part of the head in the cardboard and push the knot of the balloon through it. Then hang it up on a nail from the tail of the balloon.
Thus you have created a reactive target that you can first double tap and then make actually drop with a headshot. If you want to see how it works in real life training see the following finnish SF video:
http://media.tietotalo.fi/mil/UTTI_Streaming_256k.wmv
You will see such targets at 5 minutes in.

Hmmm - that's a great idea, unfortunately the area where we shoot is rather barren so I would need to design frames or other ways to hang/prop such targets over things... While not as heavy - it'll leave me with lots of lumber or plastic, replacing things as well. I have some junk 2x4's that I picked up and planning to leave dug in our shooting spot - I guess I can give those targets a try as long as 2x4's stay up... I do have quite a bit of cardboard saved up too.
For steels I was thinking http://www.portatarget.com
http://www.portatarget.com/media/knckdwn.jpg
PLATES: 8," 10" and 12" rounds
Other shapes/sizes available,
including I.M.S.A. set
DIMENSIONS: 18" x 6"
WEIGHT: 8-20 lbs.
Cost is low enough where I can afford to be wrong and just have a junker to try out - it only has to go from the back of the truck and into the ground... I have a storage room under the stairs to keep targets I don't leave behind...

Yeah it is a great idea. Unfortunately I can't take the credit for it. :) We use these things for MP(& SF as seen in the vid) training over here. It's quite common way to create multiple targets fast & cheap. If you are a smoker, it is also possible to make very special smoking targets as well! ;)
2x4's are plenty enough, you can do it already with 1x4 boards. I think one will be enough for each target. Simply sink the end into ground with iron bar and you have your "frame".

Nice shooting guys. Looks like a good day on the range. I envy you for the shooting ground in the secon vid (in the woods). There's nothing like that for civilian use in my country. Would be great training grounds. We have a 100m range with gras for similar exercises, but not placed in the woods.

Great post guys.
I don't think there is really easy to store steel targets, they are always so damn heavy.
exactly.
Years ago I built this rather nice reactive target tower with six re-setting 3/8" thick steel plates 6" square.
They pivoted on bevel cut pipe sleeves [to reset horizontally] mounted behind a vertical angle.
It was awesome. A 9mm would only cause the plates to plink, not enough to to reset on the other side.
It was built for the big guns.
I eventually gave it to a friend because it was too heavy and was in my way.
It's fairly easy to build, but weighs about 55# because of the stand.
I suppose it could be downsized to thinner plates, say 1/4"thick.
The weight of the base could also be reduced by using sandbags, or other local ballast.
I guess it could be made to weigh 25-30#, but it's something to see in use.
It looked something like this:

HE219, how much did it cost you to build the target system?
Nothing. I used my father's shop, but with thought out plans/sketches it could be built at a local fabrication shop for about a buck-fitty ..
Keep posting those pix!

He
I used a lower shutter speed like in the 1/30s 1/20s, got on the same level with the guys as they walked down field, and moved back away from them. I tried to keep them on the same focus level as possible, while other objects in the background went into the motion forward/backwards blur.
Tomorrow more pics, i need to catch some zzzzzzs. Woke up very early last today

Funny $hit.
Every time we all post we always say "Would be great to hook up" and get our small groups together for a bigger shoot.
Bah!
Damn distances.
Well, Geezah and I will always be up to hosting if any of should find yourselves in our neck of the woods.
Give it another 3 years and maybe I'll have a full blown commercial range.
If you guys want steel and do not mind paying the shipping, one of our shooting buddies makes some pretty nice ones. A little rough around the edges but handle rifle rounds pretty well...
PM if you are interested.

I totally agree, we just need to get organized, and take off there. How can we bring our toys as well? Is it ok to cross borders with firearms?

I totally agree, we just need to get organized, and take off there. How can we bring our toys as well? Is it ok to cross borders with firearms?
Yes, Firearm Owners Protection Act. ;-)
"Safe Passage" Provision
One of the law's provisions was that persons traveling from one state to another for a shooting sports event or any other lawful activity cannot be arrested for a firearms offense in a state that has strict gun control laws if the traveler is just passing through (short stops for food and gas) and the firearms and ammunition are securely locked, unloaded, and not immediately accessible.
An example of this would be that someone driving from Virginia to an IPSC competition in Vermont with a locked hard case containing an unloaded handgun and a box of ammunition in the trunk could not be prosecuted in New Jersey or New York City for illegal possession of a handgun provided that he did not stop in New Jersey or New York for an extended period of time.
With these considerations in mind, it is advisable for travelers with firearms to maintain a low profile while passing through any such states that have severe restrictions on gun ownership.
This law is based on the doctrine of legal preemption in that people traveling between states fall under the jurisdiction of federal law which overrides state law.

I have a cousin who worked for the rail road and had those noise makers/boomer (not sure what they are called_/ They are placed on the track and when a train runs over it, it sets off a loud bang, It is used for warning the engineer of work ahead.
Those are fun to shoot.
When I was a kid, a friend of my dads had a 303 enfield with explosive tip ammo... what a BLAST or should I say I got a extra bang out of shooting that stuff.
Milk jugs with color water in them.
I like stuff I can clean up easy. There is no reason to ruin a shooting area by making it look like a cat hole.
Obviously Glass is a big no no, especially where grazing animals are. The will accidentally eat the glass shards.. not good.

This may sound like sacrilege, but I do like to shoot fruit - hit a sale at a large supermarket or small fruit vendors will always have boxes underneath for fruits that began to rot - don't mind little cash for a box of browned stuff... Grapefruits make the best bang for the buck - coconuts are the most impressive if season is right. Pineapples are neither pine nor apples, yet make use of high velocity projectiles.
No need to clean up either - desert wildlife just goes crazy for that stuff, often even before we finish shooting! Last time saw some kamikaze varmint literally leaping across targets and no, I didn't hit any nor wanted to.

I think yours is the vest he brought from Russia - I think it's no longer made, but was made by ANA and worn in the first Chechen Campaign - most likely OMON or SOBR. He should know exactly which unit it belonged to.

I gave up on tomatoes... I would plant them in a series of with one week apart for each series........
I have 6 series of rows.... They all ripened at the same time, so much about planning. Plus everyone I know, except a tiny few, Always give away tons of excess from the garden. (lives in a Agri/timber area)
