Police shoot man dead over 'raid'

Police said their operation in New Romney had been "proactive"

A man has been shot dead by police officers during an operation to prevent a suspected armed robbery. The 42-year-old man, who has not been named, died in hospital after the incident at the Nationwide building society in New Romney, Kent on Tuesday.
Three men were arrested as part of the Metropolitan Police operation. No police officers were injured.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has begun an inquiry into the shooting.
An incident like this is very rare, and should be seen in perspective

A firearm recovered at the scene was taken away for forensic examination.
The shot man was injured at about 2000 GMT and died later at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Wednesday.
In a statement, Metropolitan Police said the operation had been "proactive" and had been designed to "prevent and apprehend" those believed to be involved in an attempted armed robbery of the building society.
It said that it was not terrorist related.
It is unclear if any money was taken from the building society and a spokesman for Nationwide said the company had no comment.

The operation was conducted by detectives from Scotland Yard's Flying Squad, supported by officers from its specialist firearms unit CO19.
One of the police officers involved has been relieved of firearms duties, pending an inquiry.
Kent Police initially launched an investigation into the shooting, but that was taken over by the IPCC.
Kent's Chief Constable, Michael Fuller, visited the scene of the incident on Wednesday morning to reassure residents.
He said people had not been over-awed or intimidated by what had taken place and had been carrying on "business as usual".
"An incident like this is very rare, and should be seen in perspective," he said.

As is the style around here, I will offer no opinion:

Good drills, good stuff indeed. I still feel the IPCC process and the removal of an officer from Firearms duty is flawed, where else do you get suspended for doing your job? "Bus driver removed from driving duties for picking up passengers". Crap analogy I know, but removing an officer from active duty until proven it was justifiable would leave the Firearms section a man down for the rest of its duties.

It happens alot..... there's also alot of paperwork involved on the officer's part (at least here in the US).

Obviously the Yard got the tip and conducted the intel operation. Kent AFO's would've probably been there in a support role, but CO19 would've conducted the raid. Probably save paperwork if CO19 nicked them, and they were directly in the custody of Scotland Yard, rather than Kent nicking them then transferring them.

This is a clear sign that the UK is a crime ridden, freedom hating, dystopian, socialistic, morally corrupted regime that will soon be going to hell in a hand cart. If only they had more guns.

I find the British police very brave for not having guns with the crime rate over there.

First thought was it was a bit of Kent close to the M25. Although having just googled it, its right by the sea and not near the M25 at all it sounds suspiciously like mutual aid.

Having said that, Kent has an SFO team as well as ARV's I think only one force in the country does not have 24hr ARV cover nowadays (up in Scotland incidentally). Although coverage in some counties is to be honest patchy at best (ie 1 car for the whole county at night near where I live, with the relief being an SFO callout or MDP, who have more armed officers in that county than the home office force weirdly)

Edited to say:

I'm wondering who provides armed cover for SOCA?
