interesting shot of the guy with the car-15 or xm-177 or whatever it is, with a longer magazine. Is this custom or is it an early model of a larger capacity magazine?

They were used rarily by the different SOF units in Vietnam, mainly on prisoner snatches, from what I understand.

It wasn't until February 1, 1969 that most of the active army LRRP companies and detachments were deactivated as LRRP units and reactivated as companies of the 75th Infantry Regiment.

And it wasn't until the end of 1973 did the Chief of Staff of the United States Army, issue a charter for the formation of the 1st Battalion (Ranger), 75th Infantry Regiment.

From AR-15/M-16 Sourcebook (Duncan Long) Pg28

The same year (1966) saw the introduction of the 30-round magazine developed for "submachine gun" versions of the AR-15. This magazine turned out to be somewhat flawed because in order to feed the tapered .223 cartridge through it, the whole magazine needed to be curved slightly, and the weapon had been designed with only the 20-round, straight-walled magazine in mind. The new design worked perfectly in new rifles but wouldn't fit in some old ones; Colt engineers discovered that the wells of some AR-15s were too tight to accomodate the gentle curve needed for optimum feeding of a 30-round magazine.
In order not to change specifications of the original rifle, the top of the final magazine was straight like the 20-round magazine until it got past the magazine well section, where it then started to curve. This arrangement worked, but not as flawlessly as the all-curved version.
My guess is that it's an early 30-rounder that was all-curved.
