At least I'm under the impression that training in the FFL is much tougher than it is in the US Army.

Once again: did you read those letters? Do trainers beat recruits with iron chairs in San Diego or Parris Island when they f**k up? Is there a constant fear of violence from the trainers eg. getting beated with a rifle to the back of head? Do they do physical exercises so much that every night your muscles are shaking so that you can barely eat? Remember also that guys that enlist in to the FFL sometimes barely can speak French. :bash:

The FFL may be very tough and regimented (the rangers and marines are as well), but I've heard that men going AWOL is very common and reenlistment is very rare and I'm sure that the physical abuse also has lasting reprucussions on the troop's mind and morale but also in the battlefield. Most of the FFL's role now a days is peace keeping and I cannot imagine their brutal training really having any need in a peacekeeping environment.
It seems like a waste of time when you also count the physcial damage and the amount of weeks that one might lose due to a broken bone or concussion. Also, while the FFL are beating up their troops and wasting time demoralizing them, the rangers are training for CQB or EOD **** or drinking at a bar increasing their comradeship and bond.

Look, they are forced to sit outside in horrible weather like that!!! It must
be highly demoralizing, oh those bastards...

Yes look how they are beaten up and are forced to drink their urine, because
simply having a good time must be forbidden in France. Only in the land of the free...

Spoken like a true brainless patriot
Let me put it this way: there are no 18 year old kids in FFL who are trying to get government pay for their college...
FFL is a true volunteer force made up of men who conscientiously put themselves in a harms way.
Also, while the FFL are beating up their troops and wasting time demoralizing them,
So according to you - Roman legions were also a bunch of demoralized deserters because, you know, physical punishment of soldiers was rather common means of enforcing discipline and achieving desired results...
drinking at a bar increasing their comradeship and bond
Wow, what an arguement :cantbeli:
If you haven't looked at the pictures yet - there is one showing legionaries "bonding and increasing comaradership"...
And generaly speaking - drinking buddies doesn't equal comrades or best friends. If I drink with someone - it doen's mean I am going to take a bullet for him...
In short FFL is a premier battle proven fighting force.
I wonder, how did you come to conclusion that US troops undergo the toughest training - you heard it on the "Discovery Channel"?
Brozozo
04-11-2004, 11:16 PM
The FFL are a bunch of tough muthaphuckas but I must say that some of their rather outdated methods of indoctrination through abuse certainly do contribute to their high AWOL and low reenlistment rates.

I've always admired the FFL. Marine boot training (1977) didn't hold a candle to the FFL training described in the letters. Lots of "bends and mothers," push ups and three mile runs, but pretty tame compared to what this guy describes. From what I've heard about current boot camp (Crucible etc) and the Marine Corps in general, things haven't changed much and are possibly worse. A retired Sergeant Major told me that he can't stand visiting Camp Lejeune anymore because he believes discipline and espirit de corps have given way to "a boom box in every pick-up truck" mentality. Marines may have better training ("CQB and EOD ****") but they are no longer disciplined and hard in the way they were reputed to be in the "Old Corps."
And just to try and hold off any onslaught from former jarheads, I'm still proud as hell to see marines sleeping in mud pits and slogging it out with the Fedayeen.

When it comes to compare units or weapons it is the usual kid's BS : "mine is bigger than yours ! " blabla... :cantbeli:
Did you ever eye-witnesse their training (in France or in the USA) ?
Why would you rely on a personal perception from this young Finish guy to juge the Foreign Legion ?
He might be right - or not.
I won't say the FFL is better than the USMC nor the Rangers nor etc.
They are all professional soldiers and only the field or combat deployement will tell the differences between their training (life or death).

Did you ever eye-witnesse their training (in France or in the USA) ? I have not witnessed any military training other than I got for a one year in Finnish Defence Forces. (But, I guess that question wasn't targeted to me, anyway).
Why would you rely on a personal perception from this young Finish guy to juge the Foreign Legion ? 2REP is not the entire legion. I rely on it purely because he is in there and I'm not, nor that anyone of us is there anyway. BTW: it is Finnish and judge.

We had (the Finns) the same thoughts when we compared those two sites. I don't know why it is, but we thought that he (the Australian) wanted to spare his family or something like that. Then we realised that he DOES NOT serve in the 2REP. 2REP is as tough as it gets in FFL.

No I wouldn't. Any loss of life (French, German, or American) bothers me. I just want you to relize that the French aren't involved in any kind of major combat on the planet. So yes you won't hear much about FFL casualties because it's hard to amount any peace keeping.
Also, I have nothing against the FFL. I think it is a great idea the French put forth, and think it could work with-in the US as well. But you can be supportive of the Legion without busting on other militaries in the process. Don't you think?

So did your brother have a say in being sent to 2nd Company? Rumor is that if your from the mountains (Norway) you go to 2nd Company. A great book to read for anyone considering the FFL is Paratroopers of the French Foreign Legion! Great book with photos, some stories of FFL and USMC confrontations! On another note, alot of the Americans in the Legion are former Marines. Personally, I think the USMC is the all aroundfinest fighty force in the world. But if you can hack it, and want to be apart of a truly well oiled fighting machine for five yours of your life, more power to ya! ;)

if so, you don't know that the French are involved in this fight ?
May the 1st, G.W. Bush announced officialy the "end of the major operations of fight" in Irak
so now it should be called "peace keeping" in Irak, or there is a problem, don't you think ?

Know of one Norwegian who wrote a book about his time in the Legion and as a merc in Surinam during the late 80's.
He served in 2 Cie. Know of another book on a Norwegian ex-legionnaire who deserted from the Legion around 1972. He served in the company specialising in amphibious warfare (3Cie?). He had served in the merchant navy though before joining the Legion. He was unfortunate enough to serve under a pedophile German section leader in Tchad and witnessed some nasty things with regards to the queer habit of his section leader that made him lose heart for the legion.

Thanks man for the FAQ-section, it is really interesting to read, and very educating,
personally I have obviously had some 19th century ideas about FFL. I like this part
"Jake" asks: "What personal items are allowed to have in the Legion and how much room there is to store them? What personal items Legionaires usually have?
Answer: "When arriving to aubagne, to the tests, all of your personal items are taken away, and you'll get them back after basic training. You can as much stuff as you want, if they wont fit under your bed, they can be stored at the companys warehouse, that is clothes etc. You usually have 8 weeks of leave per year, and if you ask, you can visit most countrys eventhough many do it without permission. Most weekends are off after the basictraining. All electronics are allowed to the rooms, digital cameras, mobile phones, tv, video, playstation, refridgerator, microwave, stereo, discman, mdplayer, satelite dishes for tv etc., what ever you want.
Damn it, this starts to sound very interesting.

At least I'm under the impression that training in the FFL is much tougher than it is in the US Army.
US Marines are not the army. I bet this FFL fella wouldn't last a week at Parris Island or San Diego.
:bash:
Are you saying your a pussy if you don't get beat with a chair?
It's the knowledge you gain at training, not the amount of beatings you take....
If that were the case, then the Russians would have delt with the Chechens before lunchtime on the first day of invasion.

Are you saying your a pussy if you don't get beat with a chair?
It's the knowledge you gain at training, not the amount of beatings you take....
If that were the case, then the Russians would have delt with the Chechens before lunchtime on the first day of invasion.
Practically LMAO at that lol.

I used to remain silent in such cases but I can't stand it any more. You don't like the US, do you? But that's your own personal problem.
This is STRICTLY PHOTOS & VIDEO FORUM so please save us all from watching your political-based comments here - it's simply not interesting. People like you are killing this place.

 my mistake.
On the other hand statements like:
Vacon wrote:

are offending people and should not be put on any forum. I wonder if he has ever served and what gives him right to make such comments and insult soldiers and marines who fight and die everyday in Iraq. Rangers, Marines or Foreign Legionneres - they are all fine soldiers and as such they deserve respect, especially from a person who is not. Making statements that some soldiers
are pussies if you compare them to some other soldiers is just stupid and childish - some maybe better trained etc. but that could be said only by an EXPERT.
HE was a Ranger and true hero - does he look like a pussy?

His ignorance on the matter, I guess. He's from Sweden and Irak is so far away from Scandinavia. He most likely didn't realize that his comment was very offensive. :|

ö-höm..
We seem to be a bit off-topic here. We all know these units mentioned can not really be compared. And there is no reason to even try.
So, back to the topic, how you like the new pics? Letters? Q&A?

Nyyperi, I have a question about your bro. How does he have connection to
the Interet, some Internet room at the regiment or does he send the stuff to
you with some computers in a public library or what?
And the new pics are nice. One can kind of see who is the Finn in his squad,
where from are the other dudes he is seen with? Looks kind of eastern European.

Yes he has connection, he answeres all the questions via email. There was a computer at the foyer in aubagne. I think. Or Castel. During the basic training anyway.
There´s also some internet-cafés at Calvi that he uses. I don't think they have internet at their own room.
The other guys are from France (the oldest looking guy, 32 or something) Peru (the youngest fellow, 18) Nepal, Marocco, Estonia....
Can't remember, its in one of the first letters.

an old video on the 2ème REP :
http://geert.stools.net/gcp.wmv
dunno why, but unlike this one, it was on colour when it was broadcast on TV :(
Thank you!!! I respect you for that video.
on some parts of this video, you can see the GCP, which is an elite unit of the 2ème REP
to join the GCP, you must have served at least four years, have one of the best record/dossier, and pass very very hard selection tests, as you can see some on the video
then you can have access to elite equipment and to have some common training with the GIGN for example, but this is only for the cream :p

some pics from Gabon, of the Aquatic obstacle course are worth seeing
Photos from the “piste collective”, the most difficult obstacle course of the entire stage. The entire course must be done with heavy ammunition cases, each obstacle must be passed with them, including the “tyrolean” suspended rope river crossing. The last 500m or so of the course is done with a makeshift stretcher, into which one member of the group must be placed and carried. Going up and down steep muddy banks, through treacherous mangroves and climbing tough obstacles, the course really takes its toll on any participant’s physical and mental strength.

Pics are from a "single-use-camera", and then scanned. The size is decided by the webmaster of www.koalitio.com, who's hosting the photos.
There shouldn't be any new windows opening, where was this? At pictures?
I'm pushing my computer-abilities even when quoting your post. ;)

All I'm saying is that instead of commenting on the actual site and the foreign legion it has turned into another "wich country has the best troops" thread. I think the Finnish guy in the legion would be laughing his balls off.

Ah yes, the way I figured it sooner or later that site was mentioned here...
Anyway, that site has some interesting information from time to time and especially when you get the chance to read all the stuff a certain Finnish "foreign legioneer" has written down.
Too bad that feature can't be accessed normally anymore due to the actions of a few "undesirables", but nevertheless the stuff you can find from the site still keep me reading it once in awhile.
I bet they're going to have a topic about "They talked about us on Milphotos!!" soon...

What exactly does the FFL do?
Well , they are a "part" of the French armed forces and go to fight wherever France needs them in.
To my knowledge , they've been in every conflict that France has taken part in and certainly feature quite a "training" in their ranks.
Something to fear , I would say...

GIGN = Military (Gendarmerie)
RAID and GIPN = Police
