A local television station did a story the other night on what it calls 'numbers stations'. These are mystereous transmissions on shortwave frequencies in which a monotone voice repeats a series of numbers over and over. The broadcasts seem to move among different frequencies and don't necessarily broadcast at the same time each day. Furthermore, no broadcaster or government owns up to making the broadcasts. The TV station played some recordings of such broadcasts and it sounds a little erie to hear nothing but strings of numbers over and over.
The TV story said it was rumored one of the mysterious stations was a British operation broadcasting out of Cyprus and another rumor was there are several Spanish language broadcasts out of Cuba for drug smugglers, but the US government won't even acknowledge their existence.
So, what are they? Are they a navigation system for the Black Helicopter Men? Is it a seceret CIA or MI-6 communication system? Or is it a terrorist cult commanding your next door neighbor who is really a sleeper agent to set off a Suitcase Nuclear bomb?

One person was arrested, tried and sent to prison for being a spy based on "number station" information not released to the public.

Yeah it's the government.
But it doesn't make for good TV if there's no mystery ;)

radio havana has a lot of these in wich they mention a specific group and then go into number sequences, a low tech way to pass on instructions to spies perhaps.

That's some mysterious stuff. What else could it be used for, apart from dodgy government spy business? I can't think of anything.
