Canada set for mass baby seal hunting

The largest single seal hunt in half a century begins in Canada on Monday.
The government is allowing more than 300,000 seals to be killed this year, many of them in a 36-hour mass cull.

The hunting of young seals for their fur almost stopped off Canada's east coast 25 years ago in the face of international outrage.

Animal rights groups are hoping to sway international opinion against the hunt, but Canadian officials say it is now both humane and necessary.

The seal hunt in Newfoundland and Labrador withered 25 years ago as brutal images of men clubbing infant seals horrified the world.

As a result, the Canadian government reduced quotas for seal hunting to as low as 15,000 annually - mainly for meat and local handicraft.

But with fur again in fashion the hunt is back.

Last year Canada increased the quotas again, allowing a million seals to be killed over the next three years.

It is now being conducted under tighter regulations and most seals are now shot, not clubbed, but the number of animals expected to be taken this year will be the highest in decades and once again it is drawing international attention.

Hard to convince

At the weekend, Canadian Natural Resources Minister John Efford said many claims made overseas about the hunt are simply wrong.

He says the hunt is more humane than ever while the seal population is exploding and commercial fish stocks in the region are vanishing.

But the BBC's Ian Gunn in Vancouver, Canada, says against images of dying seals that can be a hard argument to make convincing.

The Canadian tourism commission admitted last week they are keeping an eye open for an international backlash should the protests gather strength.

Officials estimate there are 5.2 million harp seals in the north Atlantic currently.

Guidelines 'ignored'

Far from being endangered, the seals are responsible for the depletion of cod stocks, they say.

Animal rights groups accuse officials of "attempting to scapegoat seals" for their own fisheries mismanagement.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (Ifaw) also says government guidelines on humane hunting methods are being ignored.

"We filmed and witnessed seals being skinned alive right in front of us," Ifaw activist Rebecca Aldworth told ******* news agency last week.

"We saw live seals being dragged while conscious across the ice with boat hooks, we saw stockpiles of dead and dying seals, it was really horrific."

Another group, the US-based Humane Society, is taking full-page adverts in prominent American newspapers to urge for a travel boycott on Canada.

They also designed shirts reading "Club Sandwiches Not Seals".

Question has any of you ever seen exactly how many seals there are around? I

I can sure say on the West Coast of Canada there's so many seals its actually putting the fish population at risk. Too many seals, not enough fish...something's gotta give. Especially considering that there is alot of small fishing communities that rely on fishing for survival. Theres been alot of effort to conserve fish and catch limits, these have been in place for as long as I can remeber.

We have been calling for a seal cull for over 30 years and still nothing has been done although you are allowed to kill them if they interfere with your gear its almost impossible to do as you must actually kill them in the act of doing so. Norway has mostly common sense environmental policies while we have a hotch-potch of conflicting policies that are at best plain lunacy.

Can't really say I have an opinion on the whole ordeal. We hunt deer in droves down here (Maryland-West Virginia-Virginia) without much outrage, but we do give the deer a sporting chance by only hunting during the day. Clubbing is pretty cruel though and painful, why not shoot them instead of making them suffer?

I've got no problem with seals being culled, the Canadian government know much more about the situation than I do and if they say it needs to be done then it needs to be done.

My problem is the fact that some of them are still being clubbed to death, surely they can round up enough guns and ammunition to provide a more humane way to kill them? I feel the same about fox hunting in the UK, foxes need to be killed but there's got to be a better way than chasing them for miles with a pack of dogs.

Actually, now I've re-read the article I see that Paris Hilton is against it, well that makes all the difference in the world to me. A vapid, unnattractive idiot whose only real claim to fame is answering her phone in the middle of *** has said culling seals is bad. Shooting wastes the pelt, trappers using leg hold traps still use the club its the best method. A friend of mine who was trapping foxes years ago asked his mate to check on his traps while he was away for the day, the said mate went into the woods to check the traps and found in one of them he found the biggest fox he had ever seen and it was really pissed. Instead of getting a stick and beating it over the head to death he was so scared to go near it he gave it both barrels of his 12 gauge the result was a very dead fox and a large top quality fox pelt blasted to f*ck. My friend was not best pleased, the thing was about the size of small greyhond.

Also pups are being shot, but the use of the Hakapik is as much good as a shot.
Anyway, the rules says that any seal shot, also must be clubbed with the Hakapik.
Also clubbing, is as good as shooting on pups, cause with a good clubbing, the animal is dead within seconds. It also get paralized immediatly after getting that blow to the head.

But there was a documentary about the Polar bear and it's hunting methods. In one of the scenes, you could see the bear headbutting it's way through the ice, and then after awhile dragging the seal up on the ice, and started the festing.

We had a deer cull here a couple months ago. All the "save the animals" people were out of course, but none of them are farmers who get their crops eaten by the large number of deer. hmmm.... if its the animals or the humans that die, I wonder who is going to come out on top. They must have one hell of a lot of seals if they can kill 300 000 and still have a viable population of them. That would be fun to participate in... Get the M1 Garand all shined up for that!
