Why did they chose the the Front armor of the Turret in this shape?

My first reflection when I saw my first T-99 was "an chinese remodeled M1A1?".
They have most likely looked on the M1A2, Leo2 and so on.
...so does this mean the "people's liberation" army can kill peaceful college students and demonstrators with even MORE efficiency?
Oh, No! China suppress students by this now:

If you lok carefully, al lthe instructions on the buttons are in English! So it cant be a T-99 interior.
Chinese armor has come a long way. In the short span of 10 years they have leaped past T-72 and T-80 and maybe even T-90. In the early 90's the best the PLA could field was akin to a T-69 or bacically a T-62.
From the looks of it their designs are getting heavier and heavier. Meanwhile our tanks are getting older and older. Fact of the matter is to this day, we have yet to field a tank with active armor like the Arena and the suppose active laser defense on the T98.
Most of the tanks in inventory are old M1A1s. Granted, they are good, but the turbines are old, the GPS/FLIR is 1st GEN... hell, we dont even have a laser detection system.
General Dynamic's answer was the M1A2 SEP which cost like $7mils each. We coulda gotten a better deal if we just gotten the LEO2A6 or the LECLEARC for like $3 mil.
Meanwhile the Armor Corps is shelling alot of $$$ for the stryker, which is defnitely not a full spectrum system, with limited manueverabilty, range and protection. I dont know what each Stryker cost, but with all the FBCB2 in there its got to be over a $2 mil each. For that kind of money I would have been happy with the MERKAVA 3 or 4. Now thats some urban armor!
Actually I was thinking, we could make full use of the ols M1s and M1A1s by doing the following.
1) Take the turret off
2) Getall the excess 20mm gatlings that the navy and AF took off the F4s, F101.....
3) mount the 20mm with a 5.56mm coax, with a nother remot controlled 5.56 or 7.62 facing the rear of the remote turret, which can still be spun around to face the front. Then take 4-6 Fuel Air Explosive rockets and mounted to the remote turret.
4) In the hull, seat the driver center, the TC right and the Gunner left, all in the hull, kinda like the seating in the Mclearen F1.
5) Then slave al lthe guns to hunter-killer FLIR2s, Mount digital Cameras all around the vehicle. Have Helmet mount displays like in some video game rigs.
6) Mounts some M18 claymore that can be fired individually on the side.
7) Also, take out the old turnine and mount a Diesel.
8) finally, dont forget to have a dismount phone or a talkabout holding box outside so the grunts can talk to the TC.
What you would get is a pretty powerful urban armor system. the 20mm can kill verything up to a MBT. The FAEs can kill burn anyone in a house. And with all the space left over from not carrying any 120mms, you can carry ALOT of ammo. And with todays technology, all the digital cameras and FLIR2 shouldnt cost you more than maybe $500K. Everything else is already there. If need be take out the FAE and mount some JAVELINs and you got yourself a perfect weapons sytem that can really tare things up.

Quick, do a Google search for the email addresses of teh Joint Chiefs. They will want these ideas quick before its too late and the PLA has outclassed us. Phew, that was close. Glad this got posted on milphotos.net before it was too late. ;)

But yea, i guess someone else thought of it 1st.
the truth is that our armor is not the most advanced and there hasnt been any innovations and investments in the system. Even if they had just took out all the TIS and 70's tech and use shrinked down digital stuff, it would make for great wieght savings and ergonomics.....
I guess upgradability was never built into it.
I say at the very minimum we need a lase detection system.

First of all - thanks for nice pictures woot
Second - This might be a silly question but I ask anyway:
Is there any copyright/patent/intelectual property for military designs?
The reason of I'm asking this is: These PLA tanks' turrets basically are copied from other companies designs that had spent billions for R&D (although the dimension of those turrets are slightly different).

Patents would be the only option. Copyright only works for written materials, images, etc. Intellectual property is songs, etc. This could be an invention and possibly patentable. But, the big question is, how the hell would you enforce it? I mean, China ain't gonna pay up now are they? They've been copying military equipment for years and there is really no recourse.

so not too good you can't make good armour piercing sabots with non scaled ammo (sabot is too short so you have to use hard materials like depleyed uranium or titanium) we have the same problem with our PT91 thats why next tank will have 120 scaled ammo.
how long is this gun, what stabilization systems it has and where is ammo storage and also what optics/electronic?? :)
The following just a reference, not accurate:
T-98 has been designed with a 125mm (48 caliber) smooth bore, auto-frettaged and chrome plated gun which can fire APFSDS(1740M/S), HEAT-FS and HE-FS conventional ammunition and missiles. It is equipped with muzzle reference system, and bi-axis stabilization. Elevation and azimuth control is achieved by electro-hydraulic power drives. The gunner is provided with a dual magnification day sight and the commander with a panoramic Hunter Killer sight for all around independent surveillance. Both sights are bi-axis image stabilized and have independent laser range finders.
Multi-Target Engagement Abilities
The commander has the ability of acquiring a target independently while the gunner is engaging a previously selected one.
Rate Of Fire
The automatic ammunition handling system, with 24 round ready-to-fire magazine further supplements the Hunter-Killer capability of the tank which can load at a rate of 8 rounds a minute. The presence of automatic target tracking system enables the tank to achieve a very high first round hit probability even while firing on a moving target while moving itself.
Night Vision
Night vision for the gunner and commander is achieved through a dual magnification thermal imaging sight. The powerful fire control system computer processes all the firing information, which includes inputs from its ten sensors and is integrated to both sights.
Fire Control
The ballistic computation time is less than one second. For accurate fire control, third generation gating facility has been provided. The result of such a modern fire control system is, routine first round hits on standard (8 ft x 8 ft) targets at ranges in excess of 2000 meters.
The tank with its 125mm gun has a remarkably stable platform, which is provided by a combination of soft recoil and an excellent suspension.
I remembered a Germany magzine give a comment for T-98, you could get it to read.

Germany my friend is not Poland :-) but its prety tank prabably quite good maybe not as good as Leo2A6 (not scaled ammo and only 48 calibers gun while Leo2A6 has 55calibers with scaled ammo) but prabably it can match older like Leo 2A4 or Chaly2 (it has still 120mm not scaled ammo) ...
