Doesnt seem to be the most high risk area. Good to see the Sweedes out and about in the coolest looking cams going....looking good with some gucci/soldier developed equipment. By the way, are those landcruisers armoured in anyway?

No, not really.
These teams are more or less recon and liasion teams, but not in covert or clandestine ops. They are conducting patrols in fixed areas in order to give the commander an updated picture of the overall situation in his AOR.
It´s a common tactic to cover a large AOR with minimalized troops.

What kind of training do you need to go on a MOT team? In the Swedish army that is.

Crankep: I think all you have to have is complete service with 10-7-7, but from what I understand they only take officers and people who have been on a few deployments to the MOT's. But if you want the best training for that type of job then go for Infantry or "ranger".

I belive it's included in a course prior to leaving, I'm not sure though. It's probly on a "need" basis so not many do it

Sry for 'stealing' your thread Luno but I thought that it would be kinda wierd to start up a whole new thread for this... But maybe this has been posted before? I haven't seen it here anyway.

Two Swedish Lieutenants, Fredrik Flink and Dan Vardling, were recently awarded the American 'Army Commendation Medal' for actions taken during their time in command of the Swedish PRT in Afghanistan during 2005.

The Citation:
"For exceptionally meritourus service in charge (second in command) of the Provincial Reconstruction Team during service with the Afghan National Army first Kandak. Your extraordinary efforts, accomplishments, and can do attitude reflect great credit on yourslef, the Swedish Air Force (the Swedish Ministry of Defence) , the Afghan National Army, and the Uniteds States Army".

Lt. Flink in the center.

Different units rotate to Astan every 6 months, so it depends on the unit that's in command of the PRT.

But in general many/most guys in a MOT have a SOF background

At the moment it's perhaps not the most high risk area in A-stan, if they're part of the multinational MOT/PRT at Meymaneh up north. Though the anti muhammed cartoon riots/attacks upon the ISAF coumpound in Meymaneh didn't happen all that long ago, and the Swedes lost one guy on ops a year ago or so.

Not related I hope to that other Flink who some years ago brought disgrace upon himself and the Swedish armed forces by opening indiscriminate fire at civilians near his garrison in Sweden while drunk and in a state of grudge over not being able to chat up some girl out on the town?

I would rather compare the MOT/PRT guys to the men of the French SAS (Section Administrative Spécialisée) units of the Algerian war.
A mix of intelligence, civic-action & military advisory operators rolled into one, as well as a sort of flag wawers for ISAF & the Afghan government.

That Flink is locked up for life, he grabbed an Ak 5 and killed seven people that night.

"Fänrik Flink" has a certain ring to it in the armed forces.

Btw "flink" in Norwegian is the same as "duktig" in Swedish :).
No doubt the Flink in A-stan was a "duktig kille".

In swedish it means that you are quick (wich is another murderer, what is it with these names?).

Question: How is the Army Commendation Medal ranked?
I mean who gets it and what does it take?
How woul it be ranked compared to other american awards/commendations?

My old biology teacher in school, also called Flink. Not sure what unit he served in (or what rank), but i belive he had some para training and served in the UN force in Kongo in the early 60's, i could be wrong tho since it was so long ago. He had Malaria (?!) with some creepy twitching once in a while that scared the crap out of some girls in class (and that there was a wacko who shoot 7 people called Flink didn't make it better) rofl.

The Army Commendation Medal is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States other than General Officers who, while serving in any capacity with the Army after 6 December 1941, distinguished himself by heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service. Award may be made to a member of the Armed Forces of a friendly foreign nation who, after 1 June 1962, distinguishes himself by an act of heroism, extraordinary achievement, or meritorious service which has been of mutual benefit to a friendly nation and the United States.
Awards may be made for acts of valor performed under circumstances described above which are of lesser degree than required for award of the Bronze Star Medal.
