The entire defence force is about 4,000 people. We have about a third deployed overseas, a third training, and the last third keeping the hippies in line.

Thats very small. The Irish Army is 8500 strong with about 13000 reserves. Why is the NZDF so small? We have the same population roughly and our governments are about as anti-military spending as it gets.

Can anyone give me some intel on this?

Last year the number of people joining the army, navy and airforce was higher than those leaving, but the increases were below targeted levels required for expansion plans. The army's regular-force numbers increased by 140 soldiers to 4503. Navy increased by 98 to 2021 and the air force increased by 121 to 2401 regular personel.
