Forte de Coimbra - Close to Corumbá. Built in 1775, across the Paraguay River, Brazil's Western Borders in Mato Grosso, Pantanal, Big Swamp. A trip from Rio de Janeiro to the place via São Paulo lasted six months inland, by the rivers. From Lisbon it was the fartest route from the old Portuguese Empire, fartest in time of travel even than Lisbon-Macau in China by the Oceans.
It was a fortified point against the Guaicurus Indians, considered one of the fiercest warrior group in South America, also known as the Indios Cavaleiros (Knight Indians). They were responsible for the defeat of the Spaniards in the region before the Brazilian Conquest. The Guaicuru assaulted the Forte de Coimbra in Jan-6-1778 killing 54 Soldiers from the Forte.
In the 1801 War the Spaniards from Paraguay tried to conquer the Forte and failed after a siege. The Forte was the Brazilian stronghold in the conquest of the Pantanal.
In the 1864 War the Paraguayans conquered the Forte with 3.100 men and 11 ships. The Forte de Coimbra was reconquered by the Brazilians in 1868. The War of Paraguay lasted from 1864 to 1870.
It was the geopolitical key to Mato Grosso, the world's last agricultural plain.
