Does anybody have a source where to find information about material grades of tanks? I know that the detailed composition of these materials will be top secret but maybe some older compositions are published. Any information is appreciated.

Isby had some in one of his books. Lots of Stuff has been printed, and most of it is of no use. Janes did in fact have some information off, and on that was of some use. Mil Tec had the best introduction into the topic at the time Germany was working on a modular Leo 2

Good to hear that a lot of stuff was published. But where can I find it?
A link would be useful.

Prior to the development of the new age steels and compisates. AFAIK tanks simply used Mild Steel. Same type of steel used in the construction of things made of steel.
:)
Just because it's on a tank does not mean there is anything fancy about the steel used.

Itīs not that easy. There are hard kind of steels and ductile kind of steels. The metallurgy and the composition of the ingredients make the difference.
Additional itīs a matter of the heat treatment.

Thanks alot, I will check it out.
And no, I searched but didnīt find these links.

Get the hardness too high and it will shatter. Remember diamond is the hardest material known to man but it can shatter like glass too...

Your most welcome. I did not look a great deal at those links as I have read some of the best books on the subject. Silicon Armor was something many countries did play with, and only the USSR put it on a production tank (Iron + silicon= silicon armor). Anyway I hope that gives you a place to start from. A good engineering hand book on metals and other compounds would also be helpful, you should be able to find one of those.
