Found a very good and informative documentary on the Swedish S-tank, Strv 103, on which I served as driver/gunner in 92-93. It has since been retired for the Leo 2, Strv 122.
Help with embeding is appreciated.

Nice video, thnx for posting. Pity that the Strv 103s ended up as scrap or targets. I think that with some modifications they would be good enough medium-to-heavy APCs and could replace the old Pbv-302 in peacekeeping missions... What do you think about that PrinzEugen? I mean with the front mounted engine it is technically feasible and easier than other conversions.

put the link into ["embed][/embed"] tags, and remove the "watch?" and replace the "=" with "/" in the link.

Wow, I had no idea it could be driven/operated by 1 crewman. Interesting stuff.

But converting the S tank to an APC????? ( As somenone said)
Itīs not possible, not even on paper, if you ask me. Noo, let the S tank rest in peace.

It needs to stop when you want to shoot. Thats a massive disadvantage on the battlefield.

But the S tank came into service in the late 60īs, and it where in service to the mid 90īs... So alot of people have seen it....
The first oneīs didnīt have any heating inside, som it was not som funny to serve on them during the cold northern winters..

Yes, apart from the low profile I always felt that was its primary feature.
Youīd be suprised how easy it was to operate.
In the light of Swedens neutrality another interesting thing was the sights, it looked like this, I____I , and when the front of a opponent fit both width and height inside the markers you had 1400 meters to a T-72.

But we must remember that the S tank, was innovative in many fields... But it wasnīt alone, there where also the IKV 91, (The assultgun companies of the infanry brigades, the fist of the brigade)
Donīt forget all the problems with the S tank... The hydraulic system, and the piston enginge.... The RR piston engine was horrible, often broke down, and keept the mechanics busey.
As i said, let it rest in peace...

Quick question: is the S-tank the one with the gun that could be elevated to shoot over hilltops? Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

You mean like this :) photos from primeportal.com
^Hmmm, that's not quite what I was thinking of. I'll see if I can find something. Thanks though.

Yes it was a swedish prototype called UDES-XX-20. It was part of a studdy to develope a modern swedish MBT.
You can read about it on this site: http://members.tripod.com/Strv102r/strv_2000.htm

Awesome looking vehicles, I've always been intersted in these things.
What's the fence-like thing sometimes seen on the front, like in Luno's pictures and PrinzEugen's avatar? Looks kind of like the RPG protection being used in Iraq.

It was an RPG-fence, all right. Classified until the end of the cold war. Easy to fit and remove and its design made replacing damaged bars easy as well.

As Dark Avenger said, its an RPG-fence or anti shaped charge fence. I was in an trial and exibition platoon and my tank was the first one fitted with it in public! The unveiling was done in Stockholm when the armored forces had its 50:th anniversary.

PrinzEugen, the first picture of yours, there is a tank right in front of yours, what is it called?
The Danes had them too, tiny little thing of a tank :)

Why retire the tank. Why not put a super high speed anti tank gun on it. And use it as a defensive weapon.

It was a defensive weapon from the get go. You can't really use a turret-less tank effectivly in any offensive role. Other then that I ain't sure about the possibilities of upgradin' it. I mean you'd have to put in a whole new electronics suite with NVG/IR, command and signal systems, new balistics computers and last but not least a whole new gun witch the tank wasn't designed for. From what I have seen of the design it would be impossible to upgun it to a good standard for a AT weapon (like 140mm).
When you have done all this you have a small under armoured vehicle with a huge gun and to little ammo. It would most likly be underpowered too and due to the fact that it is turretless it would be rather hard to use against a moving tank. So with this in mind we can conclude that we could have a useless, less then reliable tincan for the price of atleast one Strv 121 (Leo2A4) witch doesn't make any sense.

The tank in front of the IKV91 on your first picture is that the nasty STRV 74?
That most be the worst **** we ever have created in Sweden

Lol, yeah mate, that was a real bastard of a tank! Canīt tell if its on the picture, but it was there that day, with a crew of oldtimers that once served on it
Hehe yes it where an ugly thing but it where better then nothing before we did get the S-tank.

Isnīt that the the thing that were rumored to have tipped over at the side if the barrel would have been fired at an 90 degrees angel? Also being the only tank that could hide behind a telephonepost...

That one of the coolest tanks and engineering projects ever. Not many have got the balls to challenge the normal turreted tank desing, design such a radical suspension system, and actually make it all work reliably. Respect to the designers!

Very interesting, thank you. The S- tank has always intrigued me, since it seems just about every other country had dropped the turretless tank/tank destroyer- concept pretty soon after WW2.
