I swear, what do you have to do to get a firing squad* nowadays?

He raped and killed a little girl, agreed to testify against the others and got a plea deal. No more than a ninety year sentence with the possibility of parole after twenty. What the hell kind of meeting was that?

"Jim the government is offering you as little as twenty years in the bog house, as your lawyer, I am advising you to take it."

He could be out when he is only 43. Darn liberal judges.

Short version of the story here:

*Actually I know, firing squads are no longer used even in wartime. No sense of tradition at all.

(editing for additional expressions of being pissed-off.)

Not sure what to think here. The short version of the story and the weak opening post for this thread really doesn't give much credit to the situation.

Just so it's understood. 20 years at a military corrections facility is no cake walk. Being available for parole in 20 doesn't mean he will get it.

A guy raped and killed a child. Then he burned the body. He got a slap on the wrist instead of a needle in his arm.

Leavenworth is pretty good for a federal lockup. I took a tour when I was doing time at Bell Hall. It was built at a time when individual cells were the rule. It is not overcrowded. The educational opportunities are exceptional. (The body shop did some work on my car.)

This guy is helping us lose the war, and the military can't quite screw up its guts to kill him.

Any chance you have info on the full story? Not that I don't believe you but, it sort of helps the thread.

I don't know of too many cases where military criminals are killed. The problem with military courtmarshals is that you are tried in front of senior enlisted and officers. What I see is that prosecutors always have an uphill battle when it comes to sentencing. The senior NCOs and officers still see the criminal as a soldier, one of their own. Dropping the hammer just doesn't happen too often. I've pulled duty as a bailiff during a courtmarshal. The guy was found guilty of attempted murder and got like 6 years. I don't think he served 2. The "jury" felt bad for his wife and couldn't give him the max sentence.

I did a Summary CM once, I maxed the guy out. (A month in confinement, reduction, a month's pay, if memory serves.) On Courts, I always wanted to push for the max, the Sergeant Major (when we had one) was usually with me. The officers seem(ed) to be a bunch of bleeding hearts.
