UBISOFT AND GEARBOX BREAK INTO WWII GAMES MARKET WITH BROTHERS IN ARMS, A REVOLUTIONARY NEW MILITARY FRANCHISE

San Francisco, CA – April 13, 2004 – Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, today reinforces its strategy to dominate the war games market by announcing a long-term deal with award-winning developer Gearbox Software to publish a new military franchise: Brothers in Arms™. With its breakthrough squad-based combat mechanism and unprecedented realism, the first game in the series is poised to revolutionize the WWII genre when it ships on consoles and PC starting Holiday 2004.

“The WWII theme is one of the fastest growing segments of the military shooter market and we believe that Brothers in Arms is the ideal title to expand Ubisoft’s new catalog of war games,” said Yves Guillemot, CEO and President of Ubisoft. “We were blown away by the immersive and realistic combat we experienced when playing this game and anybody who knows the reputation of Gearbox Software will understand the magnitude of this deal.”

Created by Texas-based Gearbox Software, Brothers in Arms is the most realistic and authentic WWII shooter ever. While other WWII games have sugarcoated the war experience, Brothers in Arms is based on a true story and will immerse gamers into the gritty, uncensored and emotionally-charged side of war. The game puts you in the shoes of Sgt. Matt Baker, a D-Day paratrooper squad leader, and asks you to lead the squad as you balance their lives with the success of the mission. The true stories and historical events you experience on your perilous journey take you through real battlefields meticulously recreated from aerial reconnaissance images, US Army Signal Corps photos and eye-witness accounts of war-torn Normandy. Players of all skill levels can battle their way through this intense experience because of Brothers in Arms innovative and accessible command and control system.

“Ubisoft’s proven know-how publishing realistic, tactical shooters make an ideal partnership with Gearbox as we create this new franchise,” said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. “With years of research and game design innovation supporting this title, gamers should be ready for an authentic story, a fresh game play design and the ultimate WWII combat experience.”

Apparently in addition to make the game maps/missions and everything as realistic as possible, this was actually a real squad, and so the characters are all based on real people and the game campaign based on their experiences or something along those lines. With the announcement of both Ghost Recon 2 and this game to be released around the Holidays of this year, I'm pretty psyched for the end of the year to come. :)

Hey, I wrote a story called "Brothers In Arms".

Not that that has anything to do with this thread, but I thought I would share that.

They have released a lot of great games.

But don't ever visit their forums - overrun by users that are pissed off... lack of support if anything happends/don't work, bugs that never get corrected, things that are promised but never show up, and so on.

As I don't have time to play all games that comes out I was kinda shocked when I read some posts in their forums...and they seem to lack in efficent moderators too.

Regardless of their problems, Ubi probably puts out the most consistently strong list of games. Raven Shield, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, IL-2, Lock-On, etc. are all top-notch games. Not even Microsoft can touch them anymore.

I completely agree that they have put out a lot of great soldier-sims (or semi-sims).

Have most of them I think. :)

Why is it ALWAYS the 101st Airborne and the Normandy Campaign? It's been done to death. Mix it up and do something about the 82nd Airborne...they do have more history after all, and switch it to Market Garden, that would be neat.
Evne a British Paratrooper game would be awesome. I loved the Pegasus Bridge mission in CoD.

The 101st really is pretty much the most famous Airborne unit of WW2. Ordinarily I'd agree with you but this is being based on a true story, so in my opinion there's a little more originality in this one.

Realistic? Hmm...let's hope the maps will resemble reality this time. (In COD the 'real' maps were a load of crap... St. Mere-Eglise was nothing like how it really was, and even Pegasus bridge was... different).

I dislike war games about real history that are made to be "uber-realistic". :P

You wonder what WW2 vets, those surviving, would think upon seeing little Jimmy playing a sanitized version of the war they lived, and lost close friends in.

Same thing for Vietnam or Somalia and the like.

Personally, I think I would be a little ticked that some kid is using one of my worst life experiences as "entertainment".

Okay, rant over. Continue crying over Pegasus Bridge not looking as you think it should or the layout of a town somewhere in Normandy not being the EXACT same layout as the original town. :P

For those of you interested, Gearbox released a trailer for this game at E3. You can download it at http://67.18.93.162/media/bia_trailer_640.zip

It looks absolutely sweet. The only issue I have with it is that the voice acting seems rather weak, but hopefully it's just stand-in voices until they can hire voice talents.

About the Pegasus-bridge map, I've lost the screenie but an overview photo of both the real bridge and the COD map was stunningly similar, ofcourse they can't model every single detail but is was pretty accurate.

I will just buy the game for those handsome shots of the M1 ironsights :D
