a quesion about how a country become a world power

i am doing an essay about japan after the meiji period (its my homework),
well the 1st part is about how a country become a world power, could anyone help me a hand?

your best bet is to do some quick research on the rise and fall of the British Empire. That will provide you with a great example of how a nation becomes a world power. I say the British empire because its rise is very well documented and would be easy to research as it existed in its greatest point in the early 1900's when 20% of the world was considered empire.

It is quite amazing that the empire really started as a group of mercenary soldiers and settlers from denmark and germany (angles and saxons). These people conquered and sort of united the island, and then with the help of the welsh, scots, and irish slowly spread through out the world. Eventually culminating in an empire that spread from australia to canada, and scotland to south africa.
