Just recently Maliki asked all troops to stop road check points in the neighborhood of shia's and also asked that the raids stop on Shia militias. The Americans warned that such actions would lead to a increase in sectarian violence, and voiced their concerns to the Iraqi PM. However, he argued that these check points served no purpose, but rather an a nuissance to the Iraqi people. The Shia's welcomed such decision just to make their lives easier.

As a result of Maliki's actions, 161 people died yesterday in one of the most horrific bombings, and yet the Iraqis pointed the blame at the Americans for this happening.

I don't understand!!! I don't see them voicing their anger at terrorists. I see their anger being directed at the Americans. This seems like a classic case of you're dammed if u do, and you're dammed if you don't. Should we just pull out and let them fight this civil war? I don't see an end in sight.

it seems he is making his allience with the militias very clear. shia all the way for him.

guess the final test to see if this true will come next week. he is suppose to meet with the US, but the shia have told him that if he does, they will no longer support him. time has come for him to make a clear choince, IMHO.

This is crazy. The Iraqis have suffered tremendous casualties, too many for me to really say that's bad. I don't know what to think anymore. Hope the troops stay safe, and all this bloodshed goes away soon. Maliki should stop talking and start making their lives a lot better.

The solution to the problems in Iraq are completely in the hands of the Iraqis and no one else. It is their choice whether they win or loose or just bleed.

Maliki is the head of the Iraqi gov't coalition. Note the coalition part. One of the biggest parts of that coalition is the Shia faction led by Sadr (who has many of the Shia militias to back him up). If Sadr withdraws (which he is threatening to do if Malkk meets with Bush), Maliki doesn't have a gov't to lead.

And if you think Maliki is bad, just recall that Cheney and Rumsfeld's old friend (and Iranian stooge) Chalabi is still waiting in the wings.

Politicians lie, people die.

Chalabi is bad, that's all I know from the SF folks. He treats everybody like crap. There is no easy solution, this is like one giant power grab, and people will say anything, do anything to take power. It's like, a story I read called Lord of the Flies.
