Theres Blackwater too...
Im thinking of writing to one of these companies and seeing what their requirements are. Because i cant be in the military because of my knee, but i do want to do some service...another thing im considering is the coast guard, as i would imagine their physical requirements are nearly as stringent as the Marines or Army. Army said i could join more than likely, but i might have trouble with the PT- they said i would have a hard time keeping up, which is more than likely true. I cant run for **** because of my leg.

Blackwater are ex special forces so if you can't get into the military you won't be able to get into Blackwater.

I would imagine all these companies would take people with experience at least military and/or law enforcement. I doubt they have the resources or the will to train-up someone and send him to Iraq or wherever to work and come in harm's way.

Most of thease guys have well over a million USD invested in their trianing by the military before they get thease jobs.
I don't think all those companies work in Iraq but many of them are providing security services all over the word. Like soldierandy said, some of them are hiring only ex-military personel and men who have served in special forces and one of such companies is ISEC Corporate Security http://www.privatemilitarycompany.com . Companies like ISEC have interesting services and some of their deployments could be more interesting than tour in Iraq.
I think that State Department's list of security companies are ment for private persons or companies who are going to Iraq and need security, not a list of companies which are working for Department of State or Department of Defence.
Deminer from Sarajevo, don't worry about your english, I was just covering MY ass! :D

Why not just start up a security company and bid for the contracts? I think there may be more money in that.
