Leader Stresses Iran's All-Out Assistance to Iraq's Security
TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei in a meeting with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani here on Tuesday stressed Iran's all-out assistance to the establishment of security in Iraq, saying that the existing insecurities are detrimental to all regional states.

"Continued insecurities and mass killings in Iraq inflict losses on all regional countries and the Islamic Republic of Iran views assistance in the establishment of security in Iraq as its religious and human duty," Ayatollah Khamenei reiterated.

Viewing the existing insecurities as the most worrisome issue of Iraq, he underlined that the Islamic Republic favors a secure, progressive and prosperous Iraq as it believes that the security of Iraq's cities is synonymous with the security of its own.

The leader further stated that once it is called on by the Iraqi government, "Iran would spare no efforts to help to the establishment of stability and security in Iraq."

He further pointed out that insecurities in Iraq are aimed at undermining the popular government of that country, adding, "Now that their plans have failed, those who have drawn up such plans are seeking to destabilize Iraq and they are using terrorists, Takfiris (non-Sunnis considering Sunnis as pagans) and former Ba'thists as their field agents."

Ayatollah Khamenei mentioned that those who foment insecurities in Iraq camouflage their efforts with a Sunni-Shiite war, and continued, "But the truth is that the Shiites and Sunnites have conducted a peaceful life along each other for centuries and there has never been any hostility between the two." p-)

I think Iran may fear civil war in Iraq more than anyone else.

I think you are right. The neighbours have grounds to worry about how Iraq might be cantoned into independant states. Turkey is worried about a Kurdish State being recognised and Iran would probably be more comfortable with current Iraqi borders than a number of smaller unstable statelets.
