Couple months back someone posted a link of a step by step guide on how to wear the famous shamagh in a particular way. Now I wonder is there is a similar page which explains on how to wear the shamagh the East African way or can a member describe the protocol?

Im talking about something like this:

At first I thought it was a picture of 2 Afghan men, until I noticed the M-4 and the boots.
Could it be....D3LT4??!!?!?

OMFG OMFG OMFG!!!1!!one!

Seriously, though, nice pic.

PS: In Iraq, it seems that any way you can wrap the thing around your head so that it doesn't fall off, is kosher.

I rock this thread

Ok, here it is. It's called a "Lungee" or "Longi" in the 'stan which just means "Turban". Different colors can signify different things. These versions seem to be tied around what is known as the "Kufi", pictured below:

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/1196/satqy01diryw4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

still no word on how to tie it.

One more thing,

Does anybody remember that show that ran on the military channel for a while called something like "America's special forces"?

It was split in two sections: the first covering SF in stan, the second on SEALs.

In the first segment there was a clip of a reserve SF who's day job was a rancher who went "local" to map a mine field. He wore a dishdasha, a kufi^, and looked exactly like an afghan.

Lungee FTW!

Spoke to mate of mine who's been both a 'loan service' and contract officer to the SAF(Sultan's Armed Forces) and he says: 'take the shemagh fold it in half(triangular),make two or three folds about the width of your forehead and wrap it 'round your head taking the top triangle and tucking it into the long ends at the back like a bandana and tie it off with one or two turns being careful not to tie it too tight, tucking the gash ends underneath at the back. The shemagh 'wrap' should be slightly higher at the front and not even all round like a turban.Omanis, both civilian and soldiers will often iron in three concertina 'folds' to give it a more 'pukka'(smarter) appearance at the front'.
What might be helpful also is any pictures of HM Sultan Qaboos who's shemag is always perfectly formed, also any pictures of the SAF's Bisley team.Hope this helps

There is another method. It's how the Tuareg in central/north Africa tie it. It's very simple and gives a similar result. However, the shape of the cloth used is slightly different not sure if it would work with a Shamagh but worth a shot. Having used both on numerous occasions I acutally prefer the Tuareg version as I think it more efficient/effective than a shamagh ...... just my 2pence.

You need a piece of cloth about 1.5 to 2 feet wide (or if wider fold in half) and between 5 or 6 feet long. Place it over you head with a short length (maybe 1.5 feet) hanging down onto your left shoulder and the rest hanging down over your right shoulder. Take the longer section on your right shoulder and start twisting it. Carry on twisting it until it "grips" your head in a similar fashion to the way women wear a towel wrapped round their head when they come out of the shower ........ except yours is on the side of the head not the front! Now take the tightly twisted longer piece and wrap it around your head over the short piece that is dangling down the other side. Obviously the longer the piece of cloth the larger the number of times you can wrap it around ....... personal preference I suppose. Once you've reached the end you can just tuck the loose bit under the other twists to secure. The shorter length hanging on your left shoulder can now be pulled across your face if you want to keep the dust out and tucked into the twists on right side of your face.

Does that make sense? ....

FFL issues long cotton scarves in tan or olive just suitable for the wrapping method Beer Monster described. But still I find Shemagh/Kuffiya more useful for the cold European climate.

It's not just the legion. They're French standard issue and come in sand, OD & (I think CE Cam).

For dust they're streets ahead of a shemagh, for cold a shemagh is better. I've got one in the garage somewhere, they cost a couple of euros in a French PX.

For the Omani stuff - If you know anyone at Beaconsfield they have some nifty Omani Army posters on the classroom walls in ALW with all their gear on. Failing that Google the TOS - Trucial Oman Scouts...

True. Shemagh is warmer, I kind of assumed it was for hot/dusty conditions. I use a (now very old and faded) east African kikoy of indeterminate colour. One useful tip is that when sleeping in hot climates without air-con you can put the scarf under a water tap for a few minutes and then lay it over you (as it's almost body length) and the evaporation will keep you cool allowing you to get to sleep more easily. Makes things that little bit more comfortable.

These guys are flogging them in the UK as "desert face veils (http://www.flecktarn.co.uk/dpcns4nx.html)".

Just as a point of interest. I was in Oman earlier this year and whilst driving up this wadi (http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c62/beer_monster/Jebel_edited.jpg)at the base of the Jebel Akhdar near Tanuf I came across a boulder with "SAS" spray painted in English on the side! Was it some British soldiers having a laugh on Ex Saif Sareea or was it from the 1957 -59?! Makes you think ......
