The first pic... i first thought that the target a/c were Bf 109:s, but they arent.. they are K-61 Hien:s (Shallow or allied code Tony..)
So.. all pics here are from Pacific.. as B-25s would have been able to fly so low in Europe.. but regulary did this in pacific.. which tells a tale of weak Japanese ground defences..

There is also lots of great low level bombing pics about allied raids to Romanian oil fields.. (Ploesti) but main a/c used there was B-24 Liberator..

When low level delayed fuse, because the pilots would try to skip the bomb across the water into the side of the ship. Hence the term "skip bomb" often used back then.
The parafrag bombs were either contact fused or delayed to kill runway clearing crews.

My grandfather was one man out of the 30 seconds over Tokyo raid. Had one of the crew been sick, he would have gone.
After that he wound up doing skip bombing trials in B24's and 25's.
Unfortunately he died before I was born, so I never knew him.

holy moly man that were great images
Facts:
the average life expectancy of a bomber crew was 15 missions
once you get to 25 missions ur tour of duty is over

Sweet pics.
The guys that flew those missions had some skills and not a computer flying and targeting.

In Europe, and more accurately, over the Reich.................... IE the 8th Air Force....

The B-25 was the A-10 of the 40's.
Fenna

I think the Typhoon/ Tempest and P-47 are more like the A-10
usa320
04-16-2004, 07:29 PM
Yeah, the P-47D really is more like the A-10, but the B-25 can lug a ton of weapons and is built like a tank like the A-10. Especially the later models. They had parachute bombs, heavy GP bombs, retarded bombs, a ****load of .50's. Rockets. Some units even fixed 75mm cannons in the noses.
Fenna

They should really change the name from retarded bombs, it's so derogatory :(

Looks like the crew in that ship actually saw the bombs dropping and is running
like hell to take cover. Hope they survived.

usa320, do you have IL2:FB? It's getting a B-25 soon

B-25 = Medium Bomber
P-47 (Thunderbolt 1) = Fighter / Fighter Bomber
A-10 (Thunderbolt 2) = Fighter Bomber / Ground attack
:)
Also, they arent name as Thunderbolt 1 and 2 in error, nor is it anykind of "lucky strike"..
;)
