They are trying to build a prison......nearly 2 million people are incarcerated in the american prison each year. The percentage of people in the prison system has doubled since 1985. Law enforcement has decreased, while the amount of prisoners increased. And, most of those are non-violent criminals and drug offenders. Sound familiar? It should. This country has a problem with our so called get tough on crime laws...the real criminals are out on the streets, doing real crimes. And, the rest of us suffer because of it.
Shouldn't we be putting the illegal drug distrubitors in jail? Should't we be putting users in treatment? Should we be imprisoning minor offenders for mandatory jail times?
Valid questions. And here is the point....when the prison system is really broken down , all it amounts to is the warehousing of societies unwanted. And the billions made from the local and state and fedral and private prison systems is staggering.
Since when is it a crime to burn the american flag? Since when is it a crime to speak out against the president and his policies? And since when do we let the government "save us from our selves?"
Very thought provoking questions. And here is the point...we as americans like to "go with the flow" because it would be a shame for us to really punish real criminals. Heck, politicians would not be able to get their prostitutes, drugs, or money. Money would not be available to build more and more prisons to house the undesireables of american society, and that would put a damper on the daily earnings of government so they can buy illegal drugs to sell on our streets....and the politicians who like to instill fear so they can control the masses.
The prison system is not for prostitutes, drug users, shoplifters, peeping toms, flashers, jaywalkers, arguments,brawlers,theifs, and drunk drivers. Yes, drunk drivers(although they commited a crime, it would be better to inforce the law with ignition locks and ankle bracelets than putting them in with hardend crooks)
How ever the prisonsystem is for corrupt politicians(quite a few come to mind)murderers, pedophiles, rapist, drug distributors and dealers, and terrorists. Spies, corrupt politicians, corrupt politicians, and more corrupt politicians.(get the hint?)Oh, and corporate criminals who scam millions out of their money daily(remember Enron?)And, some more corrupt politicians.
Wake up. Its time we chnged some of the "get tough on crime" policies, and stopped making major criminals out of petty criminals.
